Active tip: a scenic coastal walk or bike ride through Ria Formosa, with mostly flat paths and endless views 🩵
Last time we walked from Fuseta to Olhão through the beautiful Ria Formosa Natural Park.Today we head east on our bikes from our resort in Fuseta towards Tavira and Cabanas de Tavira.
Along the way, we pass salt pans and canals with flamingos and other wonderful birdlife, like spoonbills, storks, avocets, black-winged stilts and more.
The route takes you slightly inland through the aldeia of Arroteia, with a few houses, orchards, olive groves and a bit of climbing.
You then reach the pretty area of Pinheiro, with fishermen’s working houses and boats. Take a moment to enjoy the stunning views over the lagoon and the ocean beyond.
Next comes Luz de Tavira, surrounded by orchards and with a few more climbs. At the top, you are rewarded with amazing views. As you go down again, you arrive in the charming fishing village of Santa Luzia, where you can also take a short walk to Praia do Barril.
We continue cycling to the picturesque centre of Tavira. Wander through its narrow streets lined with beautiful houses, visit the historic centre and enjoy lunch at one of the many cafés and restaurants. In our guest guidebook app, you will find plenty of restaurant recommendations.
After Tavira, we continue a little further east towards Cabanas de Tavira. Once again, the scenery is beautiful, with salt pans, tidal channels and wide views. As you approach Cabanas, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed, with fishing boats bobbing and views of Ilha da Cabanas.
We arrive in Cabanas and enjoy a drink and the view on the waterfront promenade.
You can cycle back the same way, or hop on the train back to station Fuseta-A, 500 meters from our resort. Bicycles can be taken on the train free of charge.
