FORBES BOASTS PORTO AS A TOP CITY

Porto is a top destination and it has "great food, wine, the sights, perfect weather and reasonable costs", according to Forbes Magazine that recommends the city of Porto as a must-go destination for 2020.

Christopher Elliott, Forbes contributor for the Travel category, pinpoints the best places to visit in 2020 and Porto and the Douro region stand out as choice number 7.

Basically answering three questions - why, who should go and don't miss - Elliott explains the reasons why the Invicta is listed over and again in the top world must go or must see destination.

Some of the reasons is that Porto is "great for couples" or that "hand-painted tile work called azulejos" are an iconic feature of the city that must be appreciated.

Out of 20 must-see places, Porto and the Douro region rank 7 in the choices for best places to meet your aspirations and even find a surprise or two.

VOLTA A PORTUGAL RETURNS TO ALIADOS 30 YEARS LATER

Yesterday began the 81st “Volta a Portugal Santander”, which will cycle until August 11th, 1531 kilometres divided between Viseu and Porto. 30 years later, Avenida dos Aliados receives the final time trial that marks the end of the race.

The pack will face in the last kilometres a time trial overlooking the Douro and crossing Infante Bridge. The riders will have to travel 19.5 kilometres between Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto before crossing the finish line in the living room of Porto: Avenida dos Aliados.

The final stage, the 10th one, passes through Canidelo / Santa Marinha / Coimbrões / Avenida da República / Santo Ovídio / Ponte do Infante / Largo de Soares dos Reis / Freixo / Marginal / Túnel da Ribeira / São Bento / Clérigos / Aliados. It will be almost 20 kilometres with courses with different characteristics finishing for the ninth time, in the history of the competition, in front of Porto City Hall.

Porto Craft Market

On 5 and 6 July, from 9 am to 6 pm, another edition of the Porto Handicrafts Market starts. It's a municipal initiative that weekly brings together the handmade products of about 80 merchants, in Praça de Parada Leitão, downtown, near Lello bookshop.

The event again, starting this month, will be held on Fridays and Saturdays.

Don't miss it!

COME TO VISIT PORTO AND ENJOY SÃO JOÃO CELEBRATIONS

In São João's night, the party takes place all over the city and the streets are filled with people. Among toasts and sardine barbecues, there are rituals that are not lost, such as watching the fireworks in Ribeira. This year will be almost 20 minutes display and more than 150 thousand pyrotechnics firing from the Luiz I bridge and several platforms on the river Douro.

And because without music there would be no São João, there will be more than ten stages spread throughout the city, with concerts for various music tastes, all with free access.

But the party does not end at dawn. As usual, after the revelry, the aftermath is with classical music on the afternoon of the municipal holiday of June 24th. Starting at 4 pm, the “Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa” returns to the largest room of the city for the São João Concert.

At the same time also begins the traditional “rabelo” boat regatta, on the Douro river. Organised by “Confraria do Vinho do Porto”, the competition will celebrate its 36th edition this year, bringing together 18 boats on a route from Cabedelo to the Luiz I bridge.
