10 interesting facts about Vilamoura, Portugal:

1. 📋 Purpose-built luxury resort — Vilamoura was created from scratch in the 1960s by Portuguese industrialist Arthur Cupertino de Miranda, who bought a 1,600-hectare estate called Quinta do Morgado de Quarteira. His vision: build Europe’s largest private tourist resort.

2. ⚓ Portugal’s largest marina — Opened in 1974, the marina has ~1,000–1,300 berths and is the country’s biggest. It was voted “Best International Marina” multiple times by the Yacht Harbour Association.

3. ⛳ Golfing powerhouse — It has five championship 18-hole courses: Victoria (Els), Old Course, Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium as well as Vilasol

4. 🏛️ Roman roots at Cerro da Vila — Long before the resort, this was a Roman fishing settlement (1st–5th century AD). The preserved ruins include villas, thermal baths, burial grounds and remarkable mosaics.

5. 🐦 Important Bird Area — A 271-hectare western zone is designated by BirdLife International as a protected habitat for the purple swamphen and dozens of migratory species.
