Today, on World Horse Day, I’d like to share a thought that has shaped my life.
As a veterinarian and horsewoman for more than 30 years, I have learned that horses give us far more than we often realise. They teach us patience, trust, responsibility and, above all, the importance of listening.
For me, working with horses has never been about performance alone. Every horse has its own personality, its own way of communicating and its own needs. Before we ask anything of them, we have a responsibility to understand them, respect them and ensure their wellbeing.
That belief inspired me to create Quinta Lusitânia.
I wanted to create a place where horses could live as horses should – with freedom to move, social interaction and the highest standards of care – and where people could experience a different kind of relationship with them. A relationship built not on control, but on trust, communication and mutual respect.
Many of our guests tell me that their most memorable moments don’t happen in the saddle. They happen while grooming a horse, quietly watching them in the field or simply spending time in their company.
Horses are always communicating with us, if we are willing to slow down and listen.
On this World Horse Day, I hope we can all take a moment to appreciate these extraordinary animals and reflect on the responsibility we have towards them.
They have been by our side throughout history, and they continue to teach us some of life’s most valuable lessons.
If you would like to experience that connection for yourself, I would be delighted to welcome you to Quinta Lusitânia, in the heart of central Portugal.
Whether you are an experienced rider or simply curious to discover the unique bond between people and horses, our doors are always open.
Happy World Horse Day! 🐎
Yours,
Christina
