A retreat has many moments around the practice. This one is about the practice your group brings with it.

At the Quinta, much of that practice happens in Pine Hall. Stone walls, tall windows, wooden beams and enough floor for a full circle of mats. Some groups begin with cushions and a centrepiece already arranged. Others prefer the room clear and shape it themselves.

The hall can hold a morning practice, an afternoon workshop or a quiet evening circle. Its simplicity leaves room for the way each facilitator teaches.

The walls of Quinta Carvalhas hold mosaics made by people who came here to create together — giving new life to old plates, tiles and cups that no longer had a use.

From 30 November to 3 December, artist Lucy Jackson leads the next Mosaic Retreat, about an hour from Lisbon. Between sessions, there are long, slow meals, the garden, the horses in the paddock, and hours where nothing is asked of you.

The Quinta was once a ruin, rebuilt piece by piece. Making something new from what no longer had a use is part of how this place came to be — and it is at the heart of this retreat.

After a full day of movement, the body needs somewhere to put it all down.

Massage is hands-on care: pressure, warmth, time. On a retreat it often fits best as the sun goes down, after the fullest day, when guests have been practising and giving a lot.

It can be arranged within the schedule or left for each guest to book.
