On São Tomé and Príncipe, days are shaped by simple choices: a morning hike, a boat ride along the coast, a cold drink in the shade, or a long picnic where the beach feels entirely your own.

Follow the cacao journey from bean to bar. 🌱🍫 Book a guided walk to a hidden waterfall. Learn about the lost city of Príncipe’s first settlement, Ribeira Izé. Or do very little at all, with a book and the sound of the sea for company. Whether you’re here for a few days - or longer, if you’re lucky - the rhythm is unhurried.

But the scratch of sand between your toes, sun warming your shoulders and birdsong threading through the trees are all guaranteed to be part of the experience.

Set on the remote north-west tip of Príncipe Island, Sundy Praia sits within a former cocoa plantation, now reclaimed by rainforest and sea.

This is a place where it's easy to feel miles away from the rest of the world, and wildlife is part of the stay. From nesting turtles along the shore to parrots and kingfishers in the trees, and seasonal humpback whales pass by offshore.

It's a true escape for travellers seeking nature, privacy, and a slower rhythm.

From above, these islands tell a story. Shaped by volcanic terrain and centuries of cacao history, this is a landscape of rainforest-covered mountains, open coastline and quiet inland paths.

Hidden coves and long stretches of beach appear almost untouched from this vantage point, but life is everywhere. Fishing boats along the shore, villages tucked between forest and sea, cacao estates still woven into daily life.

Sundy Praia is reached slowly and intentionally, felt immediately, and remembered long after.

Here, arrival marks the beginning of a slower rhythm, guided by nature rather than schedules.

The cacao route at Roça Sundy offers a practical introduction to one of Príncipe’s most important crops.

This two-hour walking experience follows cacao from tree to table. Guests visit a working plantation to learn how cacao trees are planted and cultivated, before moving on to the drying process that shapes flavour and quality. The route finishes at Roça Sundy’s chocolate factory with a guided presentation and tasting.

Available year-round, it’s a hands-on way to understand the island’s agricultural history and the role cacao continues to play today.

One of the quiet luxuries of staying at Sundy Praia is how the beaches reveal themselves - tucked behind greenery, empty, calm, and impossibly blue. No rows of loungers. No soundtrack beyond the water.

Look a little closer and you realise this is what seclusion actually feels like. Palm trees part. The sea appears. And most days, it’s just you.

Príncipe is home to bird species found nowhere else in the world.

A guided four-hour walk through the rainforest is one of the most immersive ways to understand the island. Moving slowly beneath the canopy, guided by sound as much as sight, birdsong becomes a constant presence. With patience, you may spot endemic species such as the Príncipe warbler, speirops, thrush and scops owl.

Along the way, flashes of colour appear too — kingfishers and weavers moving through the green canopy.

At Bom Bom, the design reflects the island around it.

The bungalows are set within tropical gardens, built using local materials and positioned close to the Atlantic. Interiors are simple and comfortable, with large beds, air conditioning and ceiling fans, making them well-suited to Príncipe’s climate.

After a day exploring the island, it’s easy to imagine coming back here to slow down, listen to the ocean and rest before the next day’s plans.

Look a little closer, and you’ll find artwork inspired by Príncipe’s Auto de Floripes festival, a cultural tradition held on the island each August.

Some places ask you to slow down. Others don’t ask; they simply make it impossible not to. 🌊

Here, the world feels different. It’s miles of untouched coastline. No footprints but your own. Just the salt on the breeze, the steady pulse of the ocean, and time stretching quietly ahead.

This is Príncipe.

Between one moment and the next, the island reveals itself in soft colours, in light, in passing glimpses of everyday life.

It’s in these quiet fragments that Príncipe is truly felt.
