The gardens and terraces of Peleș Castle are more than beautifully landscaped grounds—they're an open-air museum inspired by Classical and Renaissance traditions, the estate is adorned with elegant sculptures, mythological figures, majestic lions, ornate urns, and decorative fountains.

Designed as part of the castle’s Italian-inspired landscaping, these works of art blend seamlessly with the surrounding mountains and forests. As you wander through the gardens, it’s easy to imagine each statue as a silent guardian of history, preserving the grandeur and romance of a bygone era while inviting visitors to pause and appreciate the harmony between nature and human craftsmanship.

In the late 19th century, King Carol I chose the forests of Sinaia as the site for a new royal residence, giving rise to what would become Peleș Castle, the Carpathian Pearl.

In 1873, builders and craftsmen from across Europe started bringing that vision to life.
As the castle grew, it became one of the most modern residences of its time, filled with beautiful art, carved wood, and even electric lighting.

Rather than being a medieval fortress built for war, Peleș Castle tells a story of vision, artistry, and national ambition—a fairy-tale palace nestled among the mountains that reflects Romania's royal heritage and enduring cultural legacy.

Most royal statues are built to make you look up in awe. They hold swords, ride horses, and look fiercely into the distance at unseen enemies. But if you wander onto the misty terraces of Peleș Castle, you’ll find a monument that feels entirely different. It feels like a quiet, stolen moment.

This is Queen Elisabeth of Romania—known to the literary world as Carmen Sylva, an incredibly prolific author, publishing over 1.000 poems, 90 short stories, 30 plays, and 4 novels in multiple languages such as German, French, English, and Romanian.

And that contrast is exactly what makes her story so captivating. While her husband, King Carol I, was building a nation with an iron will, Elisabeth was giving that same nation its artistic soul.
