The room is named in honor of Elisabeth Pilkington Rațiu — a British-born humanitarian and the beloved wife of Ion Rațiu. A trained nurse and passionate advocate for democracy and civil society, Elisabeth played a vital role in supporting post-communist Romania through her charitable work and the Ratiu Foundation. Her quiet strength, grace, and dedication continue to inspire us every day.

This uniquely designed room is a tribute to the legendary stage and costume designer Maria Björnson, best known for her iconic work on The Phantom of the Opera. Raised in London under the care of Elisabeth and Ion Rațiu — who played a key role in her early development — Maria studied at the Lycée Français, then at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design, where her remarkable artistic talent fully blossomed.

Every autumn, a parliament of owls chooses our garden as their seasonal home, transforming it into a magical sanctuary. Around 50 owls spend the colder months here, giving us the privilege of admiring their majestic presence.

We are happy to announce that Casa Ratiu was the venue for the Regenerative Hospitality Summit held in May 2024. Co-hosted by the Oxford Cultural Collective and Ulster University, the summit provided Ulster University students with a unique and fulfilling volunteering experience.

Our Story

Located in Turda, Transylvania, Casa Ratiu is a historical family home, turned into a social business initiative to support the projects of the Ratiu Democracy Centre.

Casa Ratiu is a member of the European Historical Houses Association. Our original Ratiu family home is a collection of restored historic buildings in the centre of Turda, clustered around a lush courtyard beside a charming stream, providing guests with a quiet, luxurious and comfortable home away from home to relax and enjoy a weekend break.

Built in the early 20th century, the Ratiu House in the centre of Turda was acquired in 1927 by Dr. Augustin Ratiu, future mayor, a respected lawyer, and President of the local Bar Association. Sent to the infamous Black Sea Canal by the communist regime in 1948, he eventually returned to find his wife and daughter confined to one dark cellar in the courtyard of his now nationalized home.

His eldest son, Ion Ratiu, a lifelong opponent of both fascism and communism, himself a lawyer and journalist, returned to his home here in 1990, after 50 years exile mainly in the UK and US. That same year he ran for President in Romania’s first free post-communist election. One of the activists of Romanian entry to NATO in 2007, he served his country as vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies and Member of Parliament until his death in 2000.
