Moscow State University

ALL-RUSSIAN EXHIBITION CENTER (VVC)

This landmark of Moscow was opened in the middle of the last century and was originally called the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy (VDNH) – it was a kind of hybrid of the city Park with an exhibition designed to demonstrate the advantages of the Soviet system and the planned economy.

The twists of the fate of the VVC and Gorky Park generally coincide – after the decline of Soviet power, both parks plunged headlong into the maelstrom of the market economy (in the 90s of the last century, then VDNH was almost the main flea market in the country, where you could buy anything). The arc de Triomphe was erected in honor of Russia's victory over Napoleonic France. The first arch was built in 1834 by the architect Osip Bove and was located on Tverskaya Zastava square.
