LET IT GO! 6 TIMES YOU SHOULDN'T TRY TO BE A PERFECTIONIST.
There are many times in life when striving for perfection is a good thing: When you're operating a vehicle, for instance, it's important that you follow every single rule of the road—your safety is at stake.
And when you're baking chocolate chip cookies, no one is going to complain if you get them exactly right (read: crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside). But there are also times when striving for perfection can bring you down. In fact, a new study published in the Review of General Psychology found that perfectionism may cause anxiety, depression, and may even be a risk factor for su***de. To help you avoid the negative consequences of being Type A, we asked Deborah Grayson Riegel, certified professional coach and author of "Oy Vey! Isn't a Strategy: 25 Solutions for Personal and Professional Success for times when you shouldn't strive for perfection."
When you're giving a huge presentation
Of course you want to deliver, and your audience wants you to give them credible information. But they also want you to be relatable, authentic, and human. "Rather than worrying about memorizing your presentation to a T and never once making a mistake, spend time preparing to be able to hit the major points, reinforce critical details, and answer the expected questions," says Riegel. Then, simply focus on making a human connection. "Tell a story, share a personal example, cite current news — just don't be a robot." And most importantly, know that if you do fumble your words, it's okay. Everyone knows that giving speeches is hard, and you'll be better off laughing it off than mentally beating yourself up for your mistake.
When you're thinking about your goal weight
Look, everyone has a "happy weight," and yes, it's good to have a weight-loss target in mind — it makes it easier to stay on track. That said, trying to stay at your specific goal weight all the time is draining.
People fluctuate.
Jobs change, relationships change, apartments change, and during all of those moves, you may gain or lose a few pounds — that's life.
"It's better to strive to be healthy and stay within a range, and that's good enough," says Riegel. If you realize you've gained or lost a lot more than you like, then take action— but if it's just a few "life" pounds here and there, take it in stride, continue doing the best you can to stay healthy, and move on. Most likely, it'll even out as the events in your life do.
When you're on a job interview
Yes, employers are looking for candidates who bring knowledge, experience, and credentials to the role. But you know what else they're looking for? Someone who's not super-stiff and rigid — someone they genuinely want to work with every day. "People want to work with people who are relatable, engaging, and imperfect — but imperfect in ways that don't impact their performance," says Riegel. So if you come off too uptight in your quest for perfection, you may be hurting your chances at landing the job. Relax, and follow the age-old adage: Be yourself.
When you're working out
This is another biggie. The ultimate goal here, of course, is to stay fit and strong and healthy throughout your life. But if you strive to have a perfect workout every time —i.e., you need to run a nine-minute mile on the treadmill or it's not worth it, or you have to do ten kettlebell reps or you feel inadequate —then you're setting yourself up for failure. "If you have to have a perfect workout, you're more likely to skip it than hop to it," says Riegel. Of course, we're not saying you shouldn't strive to hit your goals: being stronger is always awesome. But just go easy on yourself if you're tired one day or just not in the mood — you'll make up for it another time. Plus, give yourself some credit since you're not setting yourself up to resent the gym in the long run.
When you're having a difficult conversation with a loved one
Whatever the talk is about—money, s*x, chores, whatever —it's easy to go in expecting a perfect outcome. "Once I tell my boyfriend he needs to step it up in the cleaning department, everything will be better," you may think. But you're setting yourself up for failure that way, cautions Riegel, because you can only control your end of the conversation—and even that is difficult sometimes.
"Instead, strive for a conversation where you're both just talking it out, and remember: This doesn't have to be the last time you talk," she says. "It could be just the first step of what will ultimately be a series of conversations over time." Take it day by day, and you'll be a lot better off.
When you're waiting for the "perfect" time to cross something off your bucket list
Let's say you've always wanted to write a book. It's tempting to wait for the absolute ideal time to start, like when you start making the salary you think you actually deserve, or when you land that promotion. But the truth is, there's never going to be a perfect time. There's always going to be something—welcome to life—so waiting around for that ideal moment is a lost cause. "Instead, create a list of the minimum acceptable conditions for doing what you want, and then plow ahead," says Riegel. Chances are, you'll be very, very happy that you did.

TOP 10 HOTELS, B&B AND HOSTELS IN ENGLAND FOR WALKERS.
England’s countryside and coast not only offer great walking, but also the chance to cosy up in great places to stay, with food and drink as tasty as the views.
1) Beechenhill Farm, Ilam, Peak District
There’s so much to do at this Peak District farm, from hiring an electric bike to soaking weary legs in a wood-fired hot tub, that you’d be forgiven for staying put. Don’t though. There are lovely walks to be had around the neighbouring National Trust landscapes, as well as further afield in the Peak District. Friendly owner, Sue, can lend you maps and walking guides and it’s family-friendly, with sledges to borrow in winter, a farm trail to explore and a haybarn to play in on rainy days.
• Doubles from £88 B&B, 01335 310274, beechenhill.co.uk
2) YHA Boggle Hole, Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire
Just back from the beach, in a cove once used by smugglers, this popular North Yorkshire hostel has a designated room for drying wet gear and a restaurant for hungry walkers who don’t feel like cooking at the end of the day. What makes it a classic for walkers is the location, right at the end – or the start – of the Coast to Coast Walk, depending on which way you’re tackling Wainright’s much-loved route across the country. The Cleveland Way also passes by.
• Beds from £19.50pp, doubles from £60, 0845 371 9504, yha.org.uk
3) The Lazy Toad, Brampford Speke, Devon
The Exe Valley Way and Devon Heartland Way pass this picturesque village pub with rooms, which is owned, appropriately, by a couple called Walker. It has some quirks – children under 12 can’t stay and rooms aren’t available on Sundays or Mondays – but the food is award-winning (they smoke their own meat and fish and bake their own bread) and two of the five bedrooms are dog-friendly – handy if you prefer to do your hiking with canine company in tow. It’s also within striking distance of both Exmoor and Dartmoor.
• Doubles from £85 B&B, 01392 841591.
4) Lakeside House, Keswick, Lake District
Behind its Victorian facade this Lake District hideaway is a small, modern hotel with 13 comfortable bedrooms, showers as fierce as a fellside downpour and a dedicated boot and clothes drying room. Unsurprisingly, given the location, it’s a hit with walkers, who use it as a base for some of the many local walks; you can do most of them from the door, including a hike up Skiddaw and several of the Miles Without Stiles routes for people with limited mobility.
• Doubles from £110 B&B, 01768 772868, lakesidehouse.co.uk
5) The White Cliffs Hotel, St Margaret’s at Cliffe, Kent
A drying room, a library of maps and guides, picnic lunches to order and route suggestions for the region’s relatively untrammelled footpaths have won this clapboard Kent hotel a Walkers Welcome award. For a blisteringly long list of nearby trails, start with the local countryside partnership or join one of the lengthier paths that wind along this coastline, from the Saxon Shore Way to the North Downs Way. Afterwards, sit down to the hotel’s beer and food tasting menus – line-caught local mackerel with Time & Tide’s Calista IPA, perhaps, or rump steak with Smugglers Stout.
• Doubles from £109 B&B, 01304 852229, thewhitecliffs.com
6) Bridges Hostel, Ratlinghope, Shropshire
A collaboration between the Youth Hostels Association (YHA) and the Ramblers has seen the creation of two walking routes for every YHA hostel in England and Wales (available via the Ramblers Routes route finder). Not that you’ll need much persuading to get walking at this back-to-basics Shropshire hostel. A former school, Bridges promises spectacular hikes on the Long Mynd straight from the door, including part of the Shropshire Way. Reward yourself with a pint of Three Tuns’ Clerics Cure and confit of duck at the neighbouring Bridges Pub.
• Beds from £16, 01588 650656, yha.org.uk/hostel/bridges
7) Godolphin Arms, Marazion, Cornwall
Besides stupendous views of St Michael’s Mount, this small, Cornish hotel has one great selling point for walkers: a position overlooking the South West Coast Path. There’s no drying room but the hotel will happily tumble dry wet clothes, and warm damp boots in its laundry. Staff can recommend local luggage transfer companies, as well as arrange packed lunches. Following a renovation earlier this year its panoramic beachside restaurant makes an excellent goal for a day’s tramping.
• Doubles from £95 B&B, 01736 888510, godolphinarms.co.uk
8) Scaife Hall Farm, Blubberhouses, Yorkshire
The Yorkshire dales are well travelled by walkers but if you’re looking for more solitude, try the Six Dales Trail. This 38-mile trek tackles terrain better-known local routes don’t. Near the start it passes this homely farmhouse B&B where you can set yourself up for the task ahead with outstanding cooked-to-order breakfasts laden with free-range farm eggs and kippers from a neighbouring smokehouse. If you order in advance they’ll make you up a picnic lunch to take on your way, too, and wet gear can be dried in the owner’s laundry.
• Doubles from £80 B&B, 01943 880354, scaifehallfarm.co.uk
9) The White Hart Inn, Winchcombe, Cotswolds
Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire, is handily placed for the Gloucestershire Way and Cotswold Way as well as many shorter local walks. Little surprise, then, that it’s a Walkers Are Welcome town. The White Hart is a member of the scheme and, in addition to standard en suite bedrooms, it has three cheaper ramblers rooms with shared bathrooms. For dinner there’s an extensive sausage menu, as well as burgers, steaks and stews. Or head down the road to the stylish Lion Inn and refuel on beef carpaccio, cod loin or slow-cooked oxtail.
• Twin Ramblers rooms from £39 B&B, 01242 602359, whitehartwinchcombe.co.uk
10) Baileygate, Castle Acre, Norfolk
A useful pitstop on Norfolk’s ancient Peddars Way, this two-room B&B promises good beds, hot showers and Wi-Fi. Once the village doctor’s house, it now provides an overnight cure for footsore travellers. Luggage transfers can be arranged, as can simple hot suppers, and there’s an honesty bar if you fancy more than a cuppa. Or head up to the Ostrich Inn, overlooking the village green, for crackling fires, local beers and a dinner of pan-fried salmon or beef and ostrich ale casserole.
• Doubles from £70 B&B, 01760 755673, marcon-house.co.uk
