Never a dull day at Mayfair Hotel Tunneln.

Some ten years ago, in room 308, we made a discovery behind a wall.

Not just bricks.
A story.

Hidden behind plaster was an old doorway — once connecting our building to the adjacent house. A house that was erected roughly 250 years after the original structure that room 308 sits in today.

In 1850, during a renovation, the doorway was sealed.
We know the exact date — because inside the wall we found an old newspaper used as plaster reinforcement. A small time capsule, frozen in brick.

Ever since, I’ve wondered what remained on the other side.

We knew it led to room 307.
But no trace of the doorway could be seen there.

Until last week.

During a light renovation of 307, curiosity got the better of us. We decided to go looking.

And this is what we found.

In true Mayfair Tunneln spirit, we chose not to hide it again. Instead, we’ve revealed the old doorway — carefully exposing the original brickwork laid by Pelle the bricklayer almost two centuries ago.

A small portal to the 1830s.

🎥 Just found an old DR documentary from 1998 — “Corfitz – Justitsmord.”
It shows our cellar completely empty… and with a few historical “creative liberties.” 😉
Yes, Corfitz did escape through the cellar — just not exactly where the narrator stands!

Next time you visit, ask for a personal tour of the real escape route. ⚜️

Malmö Festivalen is soon full swing, and the city is buzzing with life! 🎉 8 Aug - 15Aug

Please note that many streets in central Malmö are already closed due to the festivities.
To reach our hotel now and the festival, please follow these directions:
Approach from the north side of Malmö, either via Exercisgatan or Slussbron.
From there, continue onto Norra Vallgatan. You will see signs saying “only for cars with permission” — your hotel reservation acts as your permit, so you’re allowed to enter.
Then turn right onto Bruksgatan and finally right onto Adelgatan, where you’ll find us. ♥️♥️

👑 She’s back where she belongs…
We’re proud to announce that the dramatic copper etching of Leonora Christina and Corfitz Ulfeldt is now on display in Room 407 — just steps away from where she was once imprisoned.

In 1660, Ulfeldt escaped arrest through a secret tunnel beneath our hotel, leaving his wife Leonora behind in captivity. That very room is now our Eleanora Bo***ir, located right next to reception. And now, fittingly, the historic artwork is back where it belongs — just upstairs.

A scene of betrayal, royalty, and escape…
A Danish princess locked up…
A husband who funded war against his own homeland…
And now, a room where guests sleep with centuries of stories hanging quietly on the wall.

The "FUTURE OURS" exhibition, an inspiring initiative of ART 2030, connects art with the United Nations' 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Originally displayed across New York City's boroughs and at the United Nations headquarters, it sought to engage the public in discussions on pressing global challenges like climate action, equality, and well-being.

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Patricia Domínguez, and Jeppe Ugelvig, and generously supported by JCDecaux, The Bikuben Foundation, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Denmark, The Ministry of Culture Denmark, Trine and Gunnar Kjems (the current owners of Mayfair Hotel Tunneln), and The ART 2030 Patrons, the exhibition emphasized grassroots public interaction by featuring billboard art in unexpected urban spaces, such as bus shelters. This innovative approach underscored the power of art in mobilizing communities and fostering political engagement.

We at Mayfair Hotel Tunneln are proud to now own these extraordinary artworks, which are prominently displayed in the corridor adjacent to rooms 150, 250, 350, and 450.
