Together with Indigenous Miskito communities we restore forest, fight wildfire and build livelihoods from the land. Paskaia is a community-led forest restoration project in La Mosquitia, Honduras. Together with Indigenous Miskito communities we are bringing the forest back to a landscape that has burned year after year. Together with the local community we build fire brigades, and once the fires stop, millions of young trees recover on their own. That is how we restore thousands of hectares at once, not plot by plot. Where natural regrowth isn't enough, we plant native broadleaf, mahogany and cedar on smallholder plots, supplied by community-run nurseries. Where there was grassland a few years ago, there is now young forest. Restoration means paid work in one of the poorest and most remote regions in Central America, and most of the revenue stays in Honduras, going directly to the communities. The work is financed through Plan Vivo Certificates, the standard that puts communities at the centre. Buyers can follow the work live from the field and see the forest growing. Paskaia means to build for the future in Miskito. We are based in Sweden and have our own team on the ground in Honduras.

Paskaia started when the Miskito people asked Magnus, “Can we get the forest back?” And now we know the answer is yes.🥹🌱

In this interview, Neil explained the project to me right before my first trip to La Mosquitia. I didn’t really understand much, but that changed within a couple of days, when we headed out to the project site. On the way back, I remember Neil saying something along the lines of ”maybe it’s just an impossible dream”. Now, a couple of years later, we can see that dream coming true.🌱 //Leo

Paskaia was started in response to a request from the Miskito people. It has always been crucial to build and design the project together. Our biggest and most important decisions, such as working on the savanna rather than only on smallholder land, and the idea of rotating brigade members to offer jobs to as many people as possible, have come from the community itself. This is the strength of co-design.🌱

The work in Honduras vs Sweden really has its own challenges. Judging by the pictures, we look more comfortable turning a lamp cord into jumper cables on the savanna…😅🌱

Updates from the field🌱

Every August, on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Miskito communities come together for Sihkru Tara, the great gathering. A day to celebrate who they are, their ancestors, their language, their land. This year, we were invited to join in CTI Lainasta, dancing and sharing stories with the people of Tikiurraya.😍🌱💚

Fire season is over. Now we’re monitoring, and doing our very own carbon calculations for the Caribbean pine. Soon we’ll know even more exactly how much carbon is stored in the new forest. Spoiler alert, there’s tons🤭🌱

Early on in our co-design process, the Indigenous community suggested rotating the brigade teams so employment reaches as many people as possible. That means frequent fire management courses, and a stronger local resilience along with it.🌱

It’s finally raining a little more in La Mosquitia.🌧️

Our brigade team has worked incredibly hard this season. These photos are from our latest field trip, when a large fire broke out just outside our protected area.🔥🧯

After hours of hard work, the team managed to put it out.🌱

Marvin has been working with Paskaia from the very beginning. His laugh can be heard all the way from Siguatepeque to La Mosquitia.😂

With nearly 400 recorded tree species in Honduras, Marvin could probably name every one of them.🌲🌳

And with decades of experience bringing forests back, he’s exactly who you want leading Paskaia Honduras.🌱
