After a long, but beautifully snowy winter - with 30cm of ice on the lake, spring has sprung in Virserum!

Of course, Jonathan couldn't sit still for too long..

He "popped over" to Wales to qualify for the UCI World Gravel finals, to be held next month in The Netherlands with a fantastic podium finish in his age group! 🥉

We still have visitors due to arrive later this month, but after a very busy summer of welcoming new and returning guests, life has quietened down just enough for us to enjoy the lake for ourselves!

We have had a busy few weeks, welcoming returning and new guests to our beautiful corner of Sweden! 🇸🇪

July is packed out, but we have some availability in our two-person cabin between 29 July and 22 August. We are also able to arrange accomodation in larger cabins and holiday houses for bigger groups.

Summer 2025: Package deal for two

Come and stay at Hazel Cottage and enjoy discounted cycle hire.

We've invested in a modest fleet of brand new bikes from the Norwegian brand White Bikes, with sizes from small to large. These versatile gravel/mountain bikes allow you to access all the forest roads and lakes hidden within them.

We still have several weeks available over summer, and you can hire the cottage and a pair of bikes for an all-inclusive price of £450. We can plan any number of cycle routes for you, taking you to the best and most secluded lakes, cafes and lakeside saunas.

We have inflatable Sevylor kayaks (fits in your car boot) and paddleboards available for hire too.

Cycle rides at dawn are always a treat here in Sweden. This morning I saw a large wild boar, yesterday a moose. Both just directly beside the road. Not to mention all the cranes, woodpeckers, deer and a fox too.

The sun is shining, the lake is warming (slowly!) and another season is upon us! 🌞🏊🚴 🇸🇪
We are excitied to welcome new and returning guests to this beautiful, peaceful corner of South East Sweden.

Småland has just won an award for the best gravel cycling in Sweden and with over 50 lakes within 5 miles of us, the swimming opportunities are just as fantastic and plentiful!

This year we have own cosy 2 bed cabin available to hire. Newly renovated in 2024, this peaceful retreat offers all the home comforts after a busy day adventuring (or a relaxed day on the private deck, overlooking the forest!). Only 500m from the lake and even closer to forest trails, it is the perfect base to explore the area whilst remaining close to all the amenities (swimming beach with diving platform, sauna, art gallery, cafes, pizzeries, supermarkets) the village has to offer.

We also work with local owners to arrange stays in larger properties (Sleeping 3-8) in and around the village. Some even have private jetties and saunas!

During your stay we have a range of hire bikes, kayaks and paddleboards (helmets and life jackets included!) available and can provide route suggestions/ gpx. files to ensure you get the most out of your trip.

Most guests travel to Gothenburg or Copenhagen airports (Ryanair fly to both from several UK airports, including Stansted, Edinburgh, Bristol and Manchester).

For those of you considering a Swedish holiday next year, I'd like to share some weather observations from this year that illustrate how pleasant it is here in summer (and at other times of year too!).

A good friend in Cullompton, Devon (where we used to live) has a wonderful weather station at his house.

By way of comparison, this year so far here in Virserum, we've had 401mm precipitation and Cullompton has had 778mm.

We've had 1758hrs sunshine (approx - value is averaged between two local stations) and Devon has had 896hrs.

And the summer (start of May to the end of September) average temperature here has been 21.68c and in Devon it's been 19.12c over the same period.

So if you want to see the sun, avoid the rain and be warmer, come to Sweden!
