Based at HBA global headquarters in Singapore, Sabine Beck, Partner, has played a pivotal role in HBA’s growth. Over the years, she has earned a reputation for designing memorable hotels and resorts, spanning high-end to lifestyle-led hospitality spaces.

Originally from Germany, Sabine has called Southeast Asia home for the past 20 years. Her European perspective and German roots inform an approach that pairs technical expertise with a keen eye for detail. Sabine enjoys bringing different voices and perspectives together, finding creative ways to balance each project’s many needs. Her work spans China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and includes award-winning boutique hotels, luxury resorts and high-end residences. Along the way, she has built close partnerships with international hotel operators and owners.

For Sabine, the pleasure lies in being part of the process from beginning to end: exploring early ideas with her team, shaping the spaces and seeing them come to life through exceptional delivery.

Each project also offers a chance to connect with its surroundings. Sabine looks to the local history, landscape, culture and craftsmanship for inspiration, merging these influences together through a contemporary lens. The result is spaces that feel distinctive and deeply rooted in their locale.

“For Indigo Ningbo, we paid homage to the city’s extraordinary legacy - its status as the birthplace of modern Chinese banking, and to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Yong merchants. Rather than recreating history, we reinterpreted it through contemporary design, weaving local culture, craftsmanship, and moments of discovery into every space. Stepping inside, a dramatic lobby is anchored by a giant vintage vault door, inspired by the silver shop storage of yesteryear, while suspended metal lines recall the curtains of traditional money shops. Abacuses, scales, Chinese silver dollars, and old accounting ledgers appear throughout - subtly woven into every corner of the hotel, from guest rooms to restaurants, from the bar to meeting spaces.

As we celebrate a successful first decade of design in Indonesia, we proudly look back on how HBA has grown into a multidisciplinary design collective of more than 100 creatives across our studios in Jakarta and Bali.

Since establishing our presence in the country in 2015, HBA has built a diverse portfolio spanning hotels and resorts, restaurants, residential, mixed-use and workplace design. Today, HBA Jakarta and HBA Bali are involved in a growing pipeline of high-profile projects across Indonesia and the wider region, while designers from both studios contribute to work across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

As the firm enters its second decade in Indonesia, this exchange is set to deepen. With more than 1,500 professionals across 29 offices in four regions, Indonesia is now an established part of HBA’s global design network, contributing not only to the country’s next generation of projects, but also to the wider evolution of HBA’s design practice.

Building on a sense of luxury found in quiet connection to nature, the Private Game Reserve in Africa blends seamlessly with the slow pulse of a world that feels largely untouched.

Intentionally subservient to nature, each structure is built using locally sourced materials and thoughtfully designed to respect and preserve the natural environment. Inside, framed views and open thresholds draw the landscape into the interior, allowing light, air, and nature to define the experience as the architecture gently recedes into its surroundings.

“What made Seraph an especially rewarding project was the challenge of balancing preservation and transformation within an existing framework. For Seraph, HBA Los Angeles repurposed the former South Temple office tower into a modern high-rise community rooted in landscape and history, demonstrating how office-to-residential adaptive reuse can successfully transform existing structures into high-end apartments while preserving architectural legacy. Set prominently in Salt Lake City’s urban core, with the dramatic backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains, HBA Los Angeles approached the project as a study in continuity, balancing the city’s contrasting character - urban energy and a strong connection to nature.

“For us, we wanted to highlight all the beautiful aspects of Japanese heritage and craftsmanship with a modern twist.” - Hayden Minick, Creative Director, HBA Leisure

Inspired by Omotenashi, the Japanese art of wholehearted hospitality - meant as complete care for guests without expecting anything in return - HBA Leisure translates this approach into Syun’s minimalist interiors. Sensory simplicity, clean lines, and a composed Zen aesthetic are complemented by natural materials and tactile textures, which gently enhance the earthy colour palette. Soft lighting enriches the space, creating a soothing and welcoming atmosphere of discreet luxury.

With over fifteen years’ experience in hospitality and ultra-prime residential design, he brings a nuanced understanding of the expectations of highly discerning clients - balancing aesthetic ambition with discretion, precision, and delivery excellence.

As Partner and Principal, EMEA of HBA Residential, William oversees the region's teams, guiding projects from concept through to completion. A Chartered Architect and RIBA member, he plays a central role in strengthening HBA Residential's presence across Europe and the Middle East, working closely with private clients and developers at the highest level.

William approaches each project as a complete proposition, shaped by client, context and brief. From spatial storytelling to material specification, every detail is resolved within a single, coherent vision. His portfolio spans landmark developments, private residences, and complex heritage assets.

"Looking ahead, I'm focused on expanding HBA Residential's presence across key European markets, while continuing to build on the momentum we've established across the Middle East. Set against Haikou’s peaceful coastal setting, this airy waterfront residence pays homage to the elegance of bayfront living. The exclusive flair of sailing yachts is subtly reflected throughout the design, imbuing the space’s soft coastal aesthetic with a sense of quiet luxury.

Generous floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the calm blue ocean nearby, allowing abundant daylight to flow within a muted palette of timber and natural stone. Sculpted lines and soft geometric furnishings introduce a gentle sense of movement throughout the space, offering subtle hints of visual excitement.

With sixteen years’ experience in hotel planning and design, Mars 要兴 brings deep expertise in both architecture and interior design through an extensive body of work spanning luxury hospitality and high-end residences. He has completed numerous internationally renowned hotel projects and received multiple coveted awards, including the 2018 Germany iF Design Award for Hotel Design and the 39th Gold Key Award.

Mars continuously maintains a belief in innovation, leveraging his creativity, practical engineering experience, and close attention to detail to achieve a comprehensive understanding of every stage of each project - from architectural structure to interior design. His contemporary spatial language is crafted with an international sensibility, translating local culture and nuances into every project. For him, design goes beyond the visual: it becomes a vessel for dialogue between people, culture, and time, looking ahead to the future through articulated spatial atmospheres.

Mars’ expertise has been instrumental in HBA Shenzhen’s sustained rise, as the studio’s portfolio continues to draw national and international acclaim. “I will take Shenzhen as my strategic starting point, build on the strong momentum of the China market, and continue to push boundaries, raise the bar, and drive value through 's design excellence,” Mars explains.

Being entrusted to reimagine a space connected to one of Thailand’s most iconic heritage brands was both an honour and a responsibility.” - Nakhan Kaewkao, Creative Director, HBA Bangkok

Housed within Bangkok’s homonymous Jim Thompson Museum, the restaurant, bar, and banquet hall reinterpret Thai beliefs and traditional materials drawing on the legacy of Jim Thompson, the legendary American businessman who famously revived the Thai silk industry in the 1950s and 1960s.

Each space reveals a curated journey through a different chapter of his adventurous life. From the restaurant’s meaningful connection to Thompson’s private residence - once a gathering place for writers, diplomats, and celebrities, to the O.S.S. Bar, inspired by his enigmatic past as an intelligence officer for the Office of Strategic Services, and to the Moonlight Hall, evoking the quiet elegance of traditional Thai ceremonies.
