The Society of Remisiers - Singapore

The Society of Remisiers - Singapore The official page for The Society of Remisiers (Singapore). What is 'Remisier'? "Remisier" is a French word meaning 'Intermediate Man'. M. Sassoon.

In the context of the Paris Bourse, a remisier is a half-commission broker. In the present Singapore context, a remisier is a licensed Trading Representative who is attached to a SGX member broking firm and who receives 40% of the commission. Until mid seventies, the commission rate was 50%. The first remisiers

The first remisiers started work after the 2nd World War with early firms such as Fras

er & Co, Lyall & Evatt and J. They dealt mainly in commodity stocks (mainly rubber and tin) which were listed on the London Stock Exchange for investors in Singapore and Malaya. These firms, being majority British-owned, depended heavily on well-connected remisiers to develop the local business. The sole qualification for remisiers then appeared to be connection with the broking firms and some well-heeled English-speaking local clients. The terms of contract between remisiers and their firms were based on 'loose' arrangements which vary not only individually, but also within the same firm, not to mention industry-wide. As the market developed in step with increased industrialisation of Singapore and Malaysia in the early sixties, more shares were offered to the public by established companies such as Esso, Shell, Malayan Tobacco, etc.

SRS National Day Dinner @ Four Points By Sheraton Hotel Imperial Restaurant on 21st August 2026
======================
We celebrated our Beloved Nation's 61st Birthday in style.

220 SRS members thoroughly enjoyed to the delectable 8 Course Chinese Dinner. Also, it was a great time for fellowship with fellow Remisiers. The whole Restaurant of 22 Tables were fully booked by us.

President Nalla gave a short speech informing members that SRS, SAS, SGX together with our Training Partner AB Maximus, will be having a meeting next week to discuss how best to further upskill our resilient Remisiers through Phase 2 of the Remisier Development Programme (RDP). Th'ng Beng Hooi, Chairman of AB Maximus, gave a brief rundown of the possible RDP courses & how it will help further enhance Remisier skillsets.

There were lots of interesting conversations, chatter, laughter & simply having the opportunity to catch up with one another throughout the Dinner.

The SRS President, Executive Committee & Members would like to take this opportunity to wish Singapore many more Great Years Ahead with our United & Hardworking Fellow Singaporeans.

Happy 61st Birthday Singapore!

As Singapore celebrates 61 years of nationhood, we pause with a deep sense of gratitude.

Gratitude for the peace and stability we enjoy.

Gratitude for the opportunities that generations before us worked hard to create.

And gratitude for a nation that has given businesses, professionals and communities like ours the environment to grow, contribute and find our place.

For 40 years, The Society of Remisiers - Singapore (SRS) has had the privilege of growing alongside Singapore's financial landscape.

Much has changed over those four decades. Markets have evolved, technology has transformed the way we invest, and the role of remisiers has changed with the times.

Yet, none of our journey would have been possible without the strong foundations Singapore has built, a trusted financial system, resilient institutions and a culture that constantly strives to do better.

National Day is therefore more than a celebration. It is also a reminder to appreciate how far we have come, to remember the generations who helped build what we enjoy today, and to ask ourselves how we can contribute to what comes next.

For SRS, that means continuing to support our remisier community, serving investors with professionalism and integrity, and doing our small part towards a stronger and more inclusive capital market.

We are proud to call Singapore home, but above all, we are grateful to call Singapore home. โค๏ธ๐Ÿค

From all of us at the Society of Remisiers (Singapore), thank you, Singapore.

Happy 61st National Day.

SRS Signature Durian Trip to JB,Malaysia on Sunday, 21st June 2026
======================
This year's SRS Signature Durian Trip was attended by almost 120 SRS members, families, and friends. Three coaches were duly filled-up.

We commenced our journey from Singapore at 7:30 am from Newton Car Park, clearing Singapore and Johor Customs efficiently before heading to Senai for breakfast.

After breakfast, we strolled through the serene Purple Bamboo Garden at Kulai. We then proceeded to Dury Dury, Durian Gourmet Restaurant, where we indulged in a variety of delectable durians, including Mao Shan Wang, in an air-conditioned environment โ€“ a first for our group. Many participants appreciated the much more comfortable environment.

Following our durian indulgence, we visited the Rasa Malaysia Store at JB Heritage Street to purchase some local products and then proceeded to AEON Mall Tebrau City for an extensive shopping experience.

Dinner was served at R&F Dragon Fish Seafood Restaurant which was delicious and the overall ambience was great.

Our return journey to Singapore was smooth, and we arrived home at about 10:00 pm.

The trip was a resounding success, with members & guests already eagerly looking forward to next year's event. ๐Ÿซฐ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒน

In the markets, we may walk different paths.
But within the Remisier community, we still come together as one.
That was probably one of the biggest feelings many of us brought home after last nightโ€™s ๐‘๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ˆ๐ง-๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐Ÿ• session.
It was heartening to see both familiar faces and many new members from the Remisier fraternity coming together again, not just to learn, but to reconnect, share experiences, and strengthen friendships within the profession.
The evening started with opening remarks by SGX Senior Advisor, Andrew Ler, whose thoughtful opening speech and warm moderation continue to inspire many within the community.
We also had the privilege of hearing from Ong Cheong Jin, Director - Capital Market Development and ESGenome at SGX, who shared more about ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐’๐†, a growing platform that helps investors and traders better connect, learn, and engage within the Singapore market ecosystem.

What stood out personally was how InvestSG is not simply about information sharing, but about building a more connected investing community. In todayโ€™s market environment, where investors are constantly navigating headlines, volatility, and shifting narratives, platforms that encourage learning, engagement, and responsible investing conversations become increasingly meaningful for retail investors.
The panel discussion that followed was equally insightful, with Andrew moderating a candid and relatable conversation featuring fellow Remisiers Johnson Koh from UOBKH, Lek Yew Meng from Lim & Tan, and Marcus Toh from PhillipCapital.
What made the session especially meaningful was the openness in which experiences were shared, from industry observations to personal journeys as ambassadors and practitioners within the financial markets. Beyond the technical side of the profession, the discussion also reminded many of us that this industry is ultimately still a people business, built on trust, relationships, and continuous learning.

And of course, no Remisier gathering truly feels complete without good food and even better conversations.

The post-event mingling felt less like a formal networking session, and more like a family gathering, with old friends catching up, newer members getting to know one another, and everyone sharing stories from both the markets and life itself.
From all of us at The Society of Remisiers (Singapore), a big thank you to SGX Group for organising and SAS for supporting yet another meaningful session for the Remisier community.
In a fast-moving industry where markets constantly evolve, one thing continues to remain special about the remisier profession:
The strong community spirit, where knowledge is shared, friendships are formed, and the โ€œkampungโ€ spirit continues to live on across generations of Remisiers.

A market is more than numbers on a screenโ€ฆ it is the collective belief of an entire ecosystem.

Today's feature in The Business Times es offers a timely reflection of what many of us within Singaporeโ€™s financial community have been witnessing firsthand, a renewed sense of vibrancy and participation in our equities market.

The Society of Remisiers (Singapore) aka SRS would like to extend our appreciation to Ms. Ranamita Chakraborty for a thoughtful and well-observed piece. Her article not only captures the energy on the ground, but also brings together the perspectives of different stakeholders across the ecosystem, highlighting both the progress made and the opportunities ahead. It is through such balanced and insightful reporting that important conversations within the market continue to be shaped.

Across the landscape, there has been a noticeable shift.

Listed companies are engaging more actively with the investment community, going beyond statutory disclosures to foster clearer communication and stronger relationships with shareholders. Investor briefings, corporate access sessions, and educational initiatives have become more frequent and more meaningful, strengthening the bridge between companies and investors.

At the same time, retail participation is growing, not only in scale but in depth. Investors today are more informed, more engaged, and increasingly taking ownership of their financial journeys. This evolution is a positive development for the long-term resilience and dynamism of our market.

As highlighted by SRS President, S Nallakaruppan , sustained efforts to enhance market vibrancy and accessibility remain essential in ensuring that this momentum continues. The collective commitment of all stakeholders plays a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and robust marketplace.

SRS Executive Committee member, Dan Chang C S , also highlighted the importance of direct engagement between investors and listed companies, noting that face-to-face interactions allow for clearer understanding and more meaningful dialogue.

At The Society of Remisiers (Singapore), we are heartened by these developments.

The progress we are seeing today is not the result of any single effort, but of a shared commitment across the ecosystem, from regulators and listed companies to remisiers, investors, and industry partners. Each plays a role in fostering confidence, facilitating access, and strengthening the integrity of our market.

While market cycles will come and go, what remains important is the foundation we continue to build, one rooted in trust, engagement, and collaboration.

The momentum we see today on SGX Group is encouraging.

More importantly, it reminds us that when an ecosystem comes together with a shared purpose, the market does not just move forward, it grows stronger.

โ€œWhat if one evening could change the way you see an entire developerโ€ฆ and the neighbourhoods they shape?โ€

On Monday evening, some members of The Society of Remisiers (Singapore) gathered for a truly lovely evening of insights, conversations, and a close-up look at one of Singaporeโ€™s most talked-about developments today, River Modern, a development by GuocoLand Group.

The guided tour set the tone.
Walking through the show gallery, it was clear why River Modern has been drawing strong interest, not just another project, but one that is thoughtfully designed to blend location, connectivity, and lifestyle. The kind that does not just sit in a neighbourhood, but quietly elevates it.

That theme carried into the presentation that followed.

GuocoLandโ€™s 1H FY2026 results reflected a business steadily building for sustainability.
At the heart of it is their ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง-๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ก ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ฒ, balancing property development with property investment. While development revenue can be lumpy, the investment side provides a stabilising base, and that is starting to show.

A few key takeaways:
๐Ÿ’Ž Growing recurring income base
Rental income continues to trend upwards, driven by premium assets like Guoco Tower and Guoco Midtown, compounding at ~19% over the years.
๐Ÿ’Ž Resilient performance despite timing effects
Revenue was lower due to development timing, but profitability held firm, with attributable profit at S$85m and profit after tax up about 13%.
๐Ÿ’Ž Prudent capital management
Debt-to-assets improved to 0.41x, with lower borrowings and financing costs, reflecting discipline in an uncertain rate environment.

Beyond the numbers, what stood out most is this.
GuocoLand does not just build projects.

From Guoco Tower to Midtown, and now River Modern, there is a clear approach, identifying high-potential locations and creating spaces where people want to live, work, and spend time. And that is where long-term value is built.

A big thank you to Group CFO Andrew Chew for the insightful sharing. And to Richard Sia, George Goh, and the rest of the GuocoLand team, for the warm hospitality and walkthrough.

Special appreciation to the SEC Newgate Singapore team, Guo Xiaorong, Rachel Lee and Chung Mei Shan, the unsung heroines who made this session possible.

Experiences like these remind us that the real edge is not given, it is experienced.
Because sometimes, the best insights are not on the screen, they are built right in front of you.

Sometimes, the quietest storiesโ€ฆ are the most worth listening to.

Last Friday evening, members of The Society of Remisiers (Singapore) had the privilege of spending time with Elite UK REIT in a warm and insightful Meet & Greet session.

It was a session where you walk in expecting an updateโ€ฆ and walk out with a deeper appreciation of the story behind the numbers.

Elite UK REIT is, by design, a โ€œboringโ€ (read, not flashy) REIT.
But as we often say in markets, boring can be beautiful.

Backed by predominantly UK government tenants, the REIT offers stable, visible income. Since 2024, it has been steadily reshaping its portfolio, extending lease visibility, strengthening its structure, and positioning for its next phase of growth.

Even in the latest quarter, this stability came through, with distributable income rising +9.8% YoY, a quiet but meaningful reflection of improving underlying strength.

A few key takeaways from the session:
๐Ÿ’  Long leases with rental typically paid in advance, supporting strong cash flow visibility
๐Ÿ’  More than 90% of interest costs fixed, providing stability in an uncertain rate environment
๐Ÿ’  Natural hedge, with both income and borrowings in GBP
๐Ÿ’  Disciplined capital management, keeping debt in check to support sustainable distributions
๐Ÿ’  Ongoing repositioning efforts, with potential new income streams such as PBSA in the pipeline

It is not a story about rapid growth.
It is a story about building resilience, predictability, and long-term value, one step at a time.

We were also honoured to have our SRS President, Mr. Nallakaruppan, presenting Elite UK REITโ€™s CEO, Mr. Josh Liaw, with our SRS 40th Anniversary Commemorative Book, a small token marking a meaningful exchange between industry and community.

A special thank you as well to Mr. Johnson Koh for the kind introduction and for helping make this session possible.

A big thank you to Mr. Josh Liaw, Mr. Jonathan Edmunds (CIO), Ms. Pearl Lam (Head of IR), and the team at Elite UK REIT for the warm hospitality and for taking the time to share openly with our members.

Sessions like these matter.

They allow remisiers to go beyond headlines and numbers, to understand the thinking, the strategy, and the people behind the companies we follow. And in turn, we can bring these insights back to the retail investor community, helping investors make more informed, confident decisions.

Because at the end of the day, investing is not just about information.
It is about understanding.

Who says finance people are all serious suits and calculators? ๐Ÿ˜„ At The Society of Remisiers (Singapore) - aka SRS - 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner held on 20 March 2026, we proved that remisiers know how to let their hair down and have fun!

The night was filled with laughter and cheers as MC Jess Chng hosted an exciting Game Show, getting everyone involved and showing off their competitive (and sometimes cheeky!) sides. Then, the floor came alive with the Belly Dance Show, where audience participation brought even more smiles, twirls, and unexpected dance moves.

It was a reminder that behind the professionalism and market charts, we are a community that celebrates, enjoys, and laughs together.

Because at SRS, even numbers have a sense of humour - and sometimes, so do we! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐ŸŽ‰

Some partnerships quietly shape a community. Others leave a mark that lifts an entire profession. For us at The Society of Remisiers (Singapore), SGX Group has been the latter.

As we celebrated our 40th Anniversary, it felt especially meaningful to pause and acknowledge a partner who has stood with the Remisier community in so many ways. Over the past few years, SGX has not only engaged remisiers, it has walked alongside us. From supporting the Remisier Development Programme (RDP) together with Securities Association of Singapore, to championing ambassadorship efforts for SDR, REITs and ETFs, to opening more doors for Remisiers to attend media briefings, site visits and corporate engagements, SGX has consistently invested in our growth.

Behind these initiatives are people who make collaboration genuine and impactful. We are grateful to Mr. Yao Loong Ng, Ms. Serene Cai, Mr. Andrew Ler, Mr. John Lim, Ms. Lynica Foo and the wonderful intermediary team including Ms. Shimona Wong and Ms. Amanda Huang, for being the bridges, the steady partners and the ones who always kept the conversations moving forward.

To the entire SGX team, thank you for believing in the Remisier profession and for supporting our mission to uplift the community.

Here is to building deeper partnerships, expanding possibilities and creating a future where Remisiers continue to grow, lead and shine together.
