Did you know that Alma Vista has its own alter ego? Her name is ALMA Medana

Just a few minutes away, in the heart of the village of Medana, stands the house of my grandmother Alma. There, I created a very special space that brings together art, music, poetry, and design. Above all, it is a place that creates community — a community that has become our greatest currency in times when human connections are constantly being put to the test.

Until July 18th, you can visit an exhibition of artworks and an installation by the renowned painter and artist Aleksander Velišček.

There’s something about the way the bedrooms open to the world beyond... From here, your gaze can wander far into the distance or rest on the stillness of the pool just below. ✨

But actually - it’s less about what you see, and more about how it feels to be here at Alma Vista. 😊

There wasn’t a single day without polenta. 😊 In the past, people ate it instead of bread, as bread was a privilege of the wealthier.

The memory of my grandma Alma couldn’t exist without her cooking polenta on her stove, over a real fire. She always used to carefully polish this stove until it shone, and the polenta made on it had a truly unique taste. Of course, made in a copper pot! 😊

Ingredients:

- 600 g medium-coarse ground white cornmeal for polenta
- 2.25 L water
- 20 g salt
- butter

Method:

- Bring salted water to a boil and, while stirring constantly, slowly pour in the cornmeal for polenta.

- Keep stirring continuously for about another minute.

- You can then cover the pot and let the polenta cook over low heat with frequent stirring for about half an hour, until it starts to pull away from the sides of the pot.

- If desired, just before the end add a teaspoon of butter.

- Then pour the polenta onto a wooden board and wait for it to cool, or serve it warm.

We served it in many ways. Two of the most typical are warm polenta with milk and gravy with prosciutto, as well as polenta fried on the “pjaštra” (the stove plate). Prosciutto was often replaced with pancetta or salami.

This recipe celebrates the unique pear variety “pituralka” that has been cherished in our kitchens for generations. It’s a little culinary postcard from Brda for the season - rustic and warm. 😊

INGREDIENTS (for 4 people)
- 8 pears of Brda (“pituralke”)
- 200 ml water
- 200 ml white wine
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- zest of a fresh, untreated lemon
- a pinch of salt

PREPARATION
1. Rinse the pears under cold water.
2. In a suitably sized pot, add the water and wine, then place the pears inside along with the lemon zest, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
3. Cook over medium heat for one hour, or until the pears are completely soft and the liquid has transformed into caramel.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS
- Serve in combination with aged cheeses.
- As a dessert, serve together with crumbled puff pastry.
- On a bed of vanilla cream with cookie crumble and breadcrumbs.

Important: Pour the caramel sauce over the pears before serving.
