Drive through the most beautiful railway landscape of Slovenia.
It will be 120 years since the first train rolled on the newly built Bohinj railway. It was also then crown prince of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Franc Ferdinand.
The Bohinj railway line is a 144 km long part of the former 717 km long railway connection Prague-Jesenice-Gorica-Trieste. It was built between 1900 and 1906 as an important connection between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea.
As an expert in the history of the Bohinj Gorazd Humar line explained to the Slovenian Press Agency, the route was a key link between the port of Trieste and the Austrian, Bavarian and Czech industrial hinterlands. Due to the tension between Italy and Austria-Hungary, it was also built as a military facility.
Among the biggest attractions of the route today is the Solkan Bridge, the largest railway stone bridge in the world.
