SloveniaWelcome Istria | Kvarner Gulf Istria | Kvarner Gulf Istria lies in three countries and is fortunate to have such a beautiful and attractive Adriatic coastline.

From sleepy inland medieval towns, to lively beaches, numerous campsites, yacht marinas and larger ports there is something for everyone. Most people would agree that a journey along Istria´s coast starting at Muggia, Italy in the north, passing trough Slovene Istria and heading towards P**a, then up the coast to Opatija - summer capital would make a fantastic trip. Important towns in Istria inclu

de P**a, Poreč, Rovinj, Pazin, Koper, Izola, Piran and Muggia - town, that guards entrance to Trieste. The ancient region of Histria extended to even wider area, including the whole Kras plateau until the southern edges of the Vipava Valley, the south-western portions of modern Inner Carniola with Postojna and Ilirska Bistrica, and the modern Italian Province of Trieste. Today Istria stands out of the ordinary as one the Europe´s most attractive destinations, remaining true to itself. Of course, Istria and the bay of Kvarner is much more than its coastline and one will probably be pulled inland into more relaxed atmosphere of Buje and Motovun towns and natural beauty of Učka mountain ridge - or perhaps attracted by one of diverse Kvarner islands .

Pazin

Pazin/Pisino was first mentioned as Castrum Pisinium in a 983. It then belonged to the newly established Duchy of Carinthia in 976, but separated together with the March of Carniola in 1040. Later, when most of Istria had gradually been annexed by Venice, Pazin was attached to Habsburg ruled Duchy of Carniola.

The Saltmakers' festival

Piran, Sečovlje natural park

30th April - 1st May 2011

The Saltmakers' festival takes place in a picturesque Istrian town Piran and at the Sečovlje salina natural park. It is an effort of revival of once the most important local customs and holiday - 23rd April, the St. George day. St. George is a patron of Piran, town of saltmakers, fishermen and merchants. Visitors will have the opportunity of buying at the salinary market and enjoy local delights including sea fruits prepared after local recipes and strong Istrian wines.

The importance of St. Georges holiday can be attributed with requests for protection against natural disasters and requests for abundant harvest, which has once been the source of local wealth and progress. It is also a springtime holiday, the beginning of all activities on the sea and saltpans, which were by far most important income of Piran. Modern Piran is already a renowned tourist destination and we believe that the Saltmakers festival makes the visit even more special.
