Windows are facing the main street so you get to observe village life & enjoy mountain views.

Just like in the other rooms, we chose wood and natural colors 🤍🧡🤎 when it came to decoration so there is a little bit of that cozy mountain vibe ♡

It’s been a long interesting ride, but we finally made it. Here’s what we offer:

It was a fun moment publishing it and going live with the listings and guess what? We got our first booking just 2hrs after 🥂 They don’t know it but we’ll surprise them with a little gift ☺️

So excited about hosting everyone who’s coming to stay at us this summer season ✨

/ Sneak peek upper floor /

April 2022 - we got the 🔑 of our house and started designing our renovation plans. These were handed over to the Protection of Cultural Heritage offices and once everything was approved we could finally start.

November 2022 - entered full in demolition mode 👷We saved what we could but some things just had to be replaced and made completely new. This hurt our hearts a bit but we had to do it. We started by removing the furniture, bringing down all the walls and destroying the floor.

April 2023 - all this took us forever and on some days the progress wasn’t very noticeable which was hard but we were doing it all by ourselves and that’s also worth something. Looking back now we’re really proud of what we accomplished 👊🏼

September 2023 - because the roof structure was old and we wanted better insulation we tore it all down and ended up with a brand new concrete plate which served is as a spacious terrace with mountain views over the summer 🏔️

Of course we didn’t throw away that beautiful wood from our roof structure - we used it to make some of our diy furniture pieces!

May 2025 - and there it is! It’s been a long way but we now have a beautiful apartment on the upper floor 👏

We’ll show you more about how it looks like in the next posts.

Also, we are finishing the last touches in the guest rooms. Once that is done, we’ll give you a full update - we said we will start posting pictures in colors once the renovation phase is over and we are almost there now 💪🏼

Now let’s talk interior! We finally have something to show you. Don’t get too excited though, we are not quite finished. (Can’t wait to start posting in colors soon)

* In the past weeks we finished painting our walls and installed wood paneling on some of them. We used the rest of the larch wood we had not used for our facade. Our windows now have beautiful diy interior wooden casings 🤎

* We also spent some time making our own furniture from the wood which used to be our roof 💪🏼 Some of it will end up in the guest rooms too and we think it will look really nice. We love reusing as much of the material as we can and this will give our place a more personal touch 🤍 But let’s talk more about these items in a new post soon.

* Of course we were also busy with our bathrooms. As you might now, we have 5 of them in total. We are not using any tiles, we chose another technique and materials which we think will work out looking amazing in the end 🛠️ We’ll show you more soon!

* Also, we started working on our kitchens 🧑‍🍳 We have 3 of those in total, so that’s a bit of a challenge as well but it’s coming along great.

There’s also been plenty visits to different shops lately and there’s going to be more of this in the upcoming weeks 🚐 Honestly, it is starting to look like home 🏡 and we can’t wait to finally move in very soon now. Stay tuned for more updates ✌🏼

[EN below] 🇸🇮 Smo v zaključni fazi prenove! Veliko se je zgodilo v preteklih mesecih in trenutno končujemo dela v naših kopalnicah in spalnicah za goste, a v tej objavi smo vam želeli pokazati in povedati malo več o naši fasadi.

Pri prenovi smo morali upoštevati nekaj usmeritev občine in Zavoda za varstvo kulturne dediščine. Pri menjavi strehe smo dodali dve kompletno novi frčadi in ju prekrili z macesnovim lesom. Macesen smo uporabili tudi za glavna vhodna vrata in dele fasade, ki gledajo na naše notranje dvorišče. Pred tem smo odstranili staro izolacijo in dodali novo. V kombinaciji z našo novo toplotno črpalko nam bo to zagotovilo najbolj optimalno energetsko učinkovitost. Pred deli na fasadi smo zamenjali tudi stara okna z novimi macesnovimi lesenimi, ki so bolj tradicionalnega videza. Komaj čakamo pomlad, da dodamo še malo rožic na police 🌸
- - - �🇬🇧 We are in the end renovation phase! A lot has happened in the past months and we are currently finishing working on our guest bathrooms and bedrooms, but in this post we wanted to show you our facade.��We had to follow a few guidelines given by our municipality and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. During the process of changing our roof we made two complete new attic windows aka “frčada” as it is called in Slovenian and covered them with larch wood. We used the same wood for our main entrance doors and on parts of the facade facing our inner courtyard. Prior to this we removed the old insulation and added a new one. In the combination with our new heat pump this shall provide us the most optimal energy efficiency. Before the works on the facade we also exchanged the old windows with new larch wooden ones which have a more traditional look. Can’t wait for springtime to add some flowers on the shelves 🌸

Just before winter arrived the demolition phase was finally over and the main house was empty. New walls and support pillars were built due to reinforcement and extension of our living space, we also finished new roof constructions with tiles. Then it was time to start the works inside. Before Spring we did the following:

▪️We filled a few smaller window openings with bricks and fixed some of the holes around inner door openings. A new concrete staircase leading to the upper floors was made too.
▪️We reinforced the old concrete plate on the 1st floor by drilling approximately 1000 holes into the old plate in order to connect it with the brand new plate which came on top of the old one.
▪️We kept some of the original brick walls, but we added a lot of new Knauf drywalls with sanitary and electrical connections.
▪️Next up was new roof insulation
▪️Then it was time for new electrical connections. We laid loads of new cables and made many decisions regarding positions of lights, electrical switches and plugs.
▪️We surrounded the cables with floor insulation which meant a lot of cutting and adjusting. Another layer of insulation was added on top.
▪️Next step was underfloor heating installation.
▪️Finally, we did our estrich (concrete screed floors).

At the moment we are proceeding quite fast and things are going according to plans which is great. More about the things we did in the last weeks follows soon in a new post.

In Autumn we removed the old roofs from the main house & the previous barn and replaced them with new wooden structures, attic windows, roof tiles, Velux roof windows and chimneys. The weather was on our side and we finished the works before winter arrived.

The barn was up first due to accessibility logistics. We wanted to keep its traditional look and charm so we picked grey concrete tiles in combination with wood for the roof and rebuilt the first floor completely at the same time. We now have a solid insulated structure with new walls, windows, a leveled concrete plate and of course the roof. We still have to do a new staircase and the facade.

Next up was the main house. Initially we wanted to add one longer attic window (“frčada”) to our new roof but we were not allowed to do so, so we ended up with two smaller ones. We picked darker Gerard roof tiles which are good for snow conditions and we think they will look good with the new facade.

Both roofs were done by and we’re really happy with their professional work!

Been a bit quiet over here but we have a good excuse - we just had a baby a month ago!

Extending our little family should not affect the works on the house too much though and we’re doing our best to finish everything as soon as possible. Looks like 2024 will be extra exciting for us 🤍

Spent je bilo dlje časa bolj tiho tule, a tokrat imamo se posebno dober izgovor - dober mesec nazaj se nam je pridružil novi družinski član!

Povečanje naše družine pa sicer ne bo preveč vplivalo na dela na hiši in prenova ves ta čas uspešno napreduje. Se bomo potrudili, da kmalu končamo. Leto 2024 bo očitno polno novih izzivov in dogodivščin za nas 🤍

Finally time for an update! Happy to announce we finally got all the permits and paperwork we needed to continue with our renovation. This whole bureaucracy process took much longer than expected and it cost us some nerves, but hey, it is behind us now and we can move forward.

Since our house is located in the heart of Rateče which is under protection, we were obliged to follow not only the guidelines issued by our municipality but also additional ones which were given to us by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia after submitting our reconstruction plans. In order to get their approval as well we had to make additional changes to our plans a few times, but after about 6 months we now reached a point where both the municipality and the Institute gave us green light.

We now have a slightly different layout and overall look of our future home but we did our absolute best in combining our wishes and their demands.

Our next challenge is to coordinate a timeline with construction companies. Obviously we want to start “yesterday” but we understand that summer is in full swing and many are on holidays at the moment. So let’s see how this chapter develops. Stay tuned!

Po dolgem času malo novic z naše strani! Z veseljem sporočamo, da smo končno dobili vsa uradna dovoljenja in dokumente, ki jih potrebujemo za nadaljevanje naše prenove. Ta birokratski proces je trajal veliko dlje od pričakovanega in nas je stal tudi nekaj živcev, ampak hej, zdaj je končno vse za nami in gledamo naprej.

Naša hiša se namreč nahaja v starem središču Rateč in s tem spada v območje varstva kulturne dediščine, zatorej smo v procesu planiranja poleg smernic občine morali upoštevati tudi mnenje in pripombe s strani Zavoda za varstvo kulturne dediščine. Pridobitev njihovega soglasja nam je vzela približno 6 mesecev, ampak zdaj smo končno na točki, ko je za nas posijala zelena luč.

Končni izgled bo s tem malenkost drugačen, kot smo si sprva zamislili, a vseeno nam je v najboljši možni meri uspelo uskladiti naše želje z vsemi zahtevami.

Naš naslednji izziv je sodelovanje z gradbenimi podjetji. Očitno želimo začeti "včeraj", saj smo z zgoraj omenjeno birokratsko sago izgubili ogromno dragocenega časa, a hkrati se seveda zavedamo, da bomo morali tudi v tej fazi ostati kar se da potrpežljivi.

Držimo pesti, da vas že kmalu spet obvestimo o napredku gradnje 🤞🏼⚒️
