We are happy to share that our Waste Haunt game has been a hit among young people passionate about solving climate change problems. This innovative game combines board and card elements to educate young individuals, especially those in and at conflict with the law, about waste management and climate change.
In empowering these young people with knowledge and skills, we are helping them break cycles of disadvantage and create a better future. The game's impact goes beyond education, it aims to create income generating sources and has huge potential for scalability.
Join us in shaping a sustainable future through gamification.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

To our very own, Mr. Christian Martyn Kamara, who doubles as the Chairman of the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO), we celebrate your outstanding achievements.
When you took the helm, SLANGO was facing significant challenges, but you promised to bring and build a solid foundation, and true to your word, you have transformed the association into a vibrant and thriving organization.
Today, SLANGO cannot only boast of a strong financial turnaround but also has reserves, a confirmation to your exceptional leadership and stewardship. Your dedication and expertise earned you a standing ovation and distinct recognition yesterday, for being the backbone in the revolution and transformation of SLANGO. And to top it all off, you have been awarded the Excellent Leadership Award at the annual SLANGO dinner.
We are honored to call you our own, Christian. Your leadership has been instrumental in SLANGO's success, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with you.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. Your vision, commitment, and tireless efforts have paid off, and we are excited to see what the future holds for SLANGO under your transformative leadership.
Thank you for being an inspiration to us all.

Last week, many young people gathered at our YMCA facilities in Freetown, Bo, and Kenema as we launched the selection process for beneficiaries of Phase 2 of our Livelihood and Employment Project.

Through this initiative, we are not just offering opportunities, we are investing in the future of Sierra Leone. Selected young people will benefit from:
Micro-grants to support small enterprises and innovative ideas
Specialized skills training to enhance employability and open pathways to decent work

Our goal is to ensure that the most deserving and motivated young people are equipped with the resources, skills, and confidence to thrive. This milestone would not be possible without the commitment of our partners, stakeholders, and communities who continue to believe in youth-led development.

Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities where young people lead the way.

When heavy rains hit, they often bring flash floods that destroy critical local infrastructures including water systems. This week, YMCA Sierra Leone joined hands with the Kpetema community to rebuild hope.

Together with young people leading the way, we rehabilitated four local water systems that were damaged by recent floods. It was a joy to see young champions of climate action putting smiles on the faces of hundreds of people.

This is what community resilience looks like; youth taking the lead in building a brighter and safer future.

We just wrapped up the very first Waste Hunt Game pilot in four communities, and it was a hit! πŸ™Œβ™»οΈ

From young people to community leaders to our elderly residents, everyone joined in the fun; learning how to manage waste, protect our environment, and take climate action. The game was full of surprises, laughter, and β€œaha” moments.

βœ… 70% of our pilot target reached
βœ… Works for different groups, with a few tweaks needed for low-literacy players
βœ… Can be scaled into a digital game in the future

A huge thank you to all who played, learned, and shared their ideas. Together, we’re making waste management a fun and community-driven mission! πŸ’šπŸŒ

Young minds, big solutions! Youth from YMCA of Liberia and Ymca Sierra Leone gathered in Freetown for a workshop on Gamification for Environmental Action. Through design thinking, collaboration and creative energy, they developed impactful game ideas to tackle real-world environmental issues.
The highlight? "Waste Hunt" – a fun and educational board game prototype teaching proper waste management through play.

Calling all young people: Join the conversation about the YMCA’s 21st-century Christian Identity.

In 2025, some YMCA National Movements are already conducting their own National Conversations on what it means for every person and every YMCA to belong in our worldwide Movement.

We are offering four additional opportunities for young people to have their say through online Youth Dialogues in English (twice), French, and Spanish.

Check out the YMCA’s 21st Century Christian Identity webpage, and register for one of the online Youth Dialogues: https://www.ymca.int/christian-identity/

🌟 The first webinar is on Thursday, 14 August, in English, geared toward the Asia Pacific time zones. 🌟

The three remaining dialogues are in September; visit the website for complete details.
