Santa Ana (also known as Ilamatepec) volcano is a stratovolcano about 45 km west of San Salvador city. It is El Salvador's highest volcano and one of its most active. The broad summit of Santa Ana has a beautiful array of concentric craters with crescent-shaped rims. Historical activity were mainly small-to-moderate explosive eruptions from both summit and flank vents and has been documented since the 16th century. The San Marcelino cinder cone on the SE flank produced a lava flow in 1722 that traveled 13 km to the east. Background: Santa Ana is dominantly andesitic-to-trachyandesitic. It is located immediately west of Coatepeque caldera. Collapse of Santa Ana during the late Pleistocene produced a voluminous debris avalanche that swept into the Pacific Ocean, forming the Acajutla Peninsula. Reconstruction of the volcano subsequently filled most of the collapse scarp. There are several parasitic vents and cones which have formed along a 20-km-long fissure system that extends from near the town of Chalchuapa NNW of the volcano to the San Marcelino and Cerro la Olla cinder cones on the SE flank./ El volcan de Santa Ana (también conocido como Ilamatepec) es un estratovolcán a unos 45 km al oeste de la ciudad de San Salvador.

In its brand-new location, the Museum of Word and Image is a museum of Salvadoran writing and writers, with a heavy emphasis on the revolutionary movement of the '70s and '80s. No surprise really - the museum's director is Carlos Henríquez Consalvi, aka 'Santiago,' the Venezuelan-born journalist who was the founder and main voice of Radio Venceremos during the war. (You're liable to see him around the museum most days.) The museum has three small exhibit areas, through which it rotates compelling exhibits on themes such as writers (like Roque Dalton and Salarrué), the massacre of 1932, and women in Salvadoran history. Throughout the museum are terrific black-and-white photos from the war years - showing scenes such as student demonstrations, life in guerrilla camps, and just ordinary people - plus personal effects, like diaries and letters. Visitors can also watch a number of videos covering the history of the war, the founding of Radio Venceremos, as well as propaganda produced by the FMLN during the fighting, like the internationally known 'Carta de Morazán.' The sound quality isn't great, however. Finally, there's a replica of an underground clandestine radio studio; an extensive library of war-related books, documents and photos; and a small selection of books for sale at the entrance. Check the website or Pashalua magazine for current readings, book launches and more. *Address: 27 Av Norte 1140 Boulevard de los Héroes area *Transport: 9, 3, 3A, 53, 46, 11 *Website:www.museo.com.sv *Email:[email protected] *Phone:2275 4870 *Price: full US$2.00, concession US$0.50, full price is for foreigners - locals pay US$1.00 *Hours:08:00-12:00 & 14:00-17:00 Mon-Fri, 08:00-12:00 Sat MAP FROM THE HOSTEL TO THE MUSEUM: https://maps.google.com.sv/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&q=museo+de+la+palabra+y+la+imagen&fb=1&gl=sv&hl=es&ie=UTF-8 — en Museo de la Palabra y la imagen.
