The Songkran Festival is a national holiday in Thailand. It marks the beginning of the Thai New Year. The Songkran Festival is also known as the water festival. It celebrates water as a ritual of washing away negativity from the year before. People celebrating Songkran take part in a traditional pouring of water that symbolizes washing away back luck and sins from a person’s life. Some people add herbs to the ritual water, as well.

As April is the hottest month of the year, the celebration of water is relevant on many levels of the festival. However, Songkran is not always celebrated in the same traditional manner. In big cities, the country takes to the streets. Cities like Bangkok see a host of street parties and water fights.

As a national holiday, offices and banks are closed during the three-day period. Many people take this as an opportunity to go visit their families. In addition to traditional water rituals and street parties, there are other key activities that the Thai people participate in during this week. Many will take this time to attend their temple. Some may also participate in an annual spring cleaning of their homes.

During Songkran Festival, many families rise early and take part in traditional Buddhist rituals. They give alms to Buddhist monks. They also take part in a ritual that is known as ‘Bathing the Buddha image.’ During this ritual, devout followers will pour water over the statues of Buddha in their home and at their local temple.

Welcome to Loy Krathong Festival 😃😃😃

The Management of Phi Phi Hotel Group and all staff would like to invite all guests to join one of Thailand's most beautiful festivals.

Tonight is the full moon night of November. It is time again for the "Loy Krathong Festival".

"Loy" means "to float" and "Krathong" means receptacle traditionally made of banana leaf for holding food, flowers, and other offerings. Therefore, "Loy Krathong" simply means to float such vessels (with flowers, lit candles, and joss sticks) wherever there is water - in the Klongs (canals), in the rivers, on the pools, and even on the sea. Giving and worship to the Goddess of Water.

This tradition has been observed for no less than 700 years since the Sukhothai period (1238-1428). According to the written account, Nopphamat, a lady of the Sukhothai Court, made the first Krathong in the shape of a lotus, and presented it to the King for the 3-day Royal ceremony held to observe the festival.

The King was so impressed by the exquisiteness of the Krathong and the gift of its maker that he praised the lady profusely and ordered to hold this event every year thereon.

Hotel will provide one complimentary Krathong for every occupied room today. If you wish to celebrate Loy Krathong Festival with us, then, please bring your Krathong and meet up at the lobby of P.P. Casita at 07:10 p.m. Our staff will lead you to our Tonsai Seafood Restaurant opposite Phi Phi Banyan Villa where you will together with other guests from Phi Phi Hotel Group float Krathong to the sea.

The Management and all staff wish all guests enjoyed celebrating this beautiful festival as much as the Thais do.

Songkran is the Thai New Year’s festival. The Thai New Year's Day is 13 April every year, but the holiday period includes 14–15 April as well.

Songkran Festival has been the Thai New Year celebration for centuries. The festival symbolizes hospitality, love, and relationship in families, communities, and society as a whole. This celebration takes place in mid-summer, while the sun moves to Aries on the astrologer’s chart. Therefore, water is used to cool down the heat, as well as to show respect and receive blessings from older relatives and pray for those who have passed away. As for community bonding, activities that take place during this celebration include building sand pagodas, making merit, and throwing water at each other.

TODAY, be prepared for the water fight !!! All you need is wearing the printed floral top and a water gun. Then, you are ready to enjoy Songkran Festival with everybody, right here on Phi Phi Island. Then, observe or join the fun filled parade in the afternoon. Finish the day with entertainment on stage with Thai’s country music singing contest & let’s see who will crown “Miss Songran of Phi Phi Island 2018”.

Happy Songkran Festival !!!
