🇭🇺 BUDAPEST: BEHIND THE BROCHURE

Budapest is one of those European city breaks that seems to have a bit of everything. Beautiful architecture, history, great food, nightlife, thermal baths and some seriously impressive views.

Of course, there are the Budapest sights you’ll probably already have on your list. The Hungarian Parliament Building beside the Danube, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle, St Stephen’s Basilica and walking across the Chain Bridge are all absolutely worth seeing.

But Behind the Brochure is about going a little further than the obvious.

📍 Because one of the first things to understand when planning a Budapest city break is actually where to stay. Buda and Pest can give you quite different experiences, and a hotel described as “central Budapest” isn’t necessarily going to put you where you want to be.

♨️ Then there are the experiences. Budapest’s thermal baths are famous for good reason, but there’s also Hungarian food to try, markets to wander, ruin bars to discover and the Danube to cruise after dark when the city lights up.

🔎 And keep looking down, as well as up.

Dotted around Budapest are tiny bronze sculptures by artist Mihály Kolodko, hidden on railings, walls and unexpected corners of the city. Once you know they’re there, spotting them becomes a bit of a treasure hunt.

🇹🇭 I refused to make 2 Thailand bookings this week.

❌Not because I couldn’t book them. I could.

❌Not because the holidays weren’t available. They were.

But because, after speaking to both customers properly about the kind of Thailand holiday they wanted, I didn’t believe what they were asking me to book was the right choice for them.

Both came to me with their travel dates and an idea of where they wanted to stay. One was considering Khao Lak, the other Krabi.

The problem was the time of year.

🌧️ Both would be travelling during the wetter season for that side of Thailand.

Does that mean you can’t visit? ✅Absolutely not.

Could they still have an amazing Thailand holiday? ✅Of course.

But if you’re picturing blue skies, calm turquoise water, long beach days and boat trips to those postcard perfect islands, you need to understand that the weather can be much more unpredictable at certain times of year.

And that’s where my job comes in.

I could have priced exactly what they asked for, taken the booking and made the sale.

Instead, I explained the seasonality, talked through what they actually wanted from their holiday and suggested looking at different areas of Thailand better suited to their travel dates.

Because I’m not here just to sell you a holiday.

I’m here to advise you on it.

💛 Holidays cost a lot of hard earned money. They’re precious weeks away from work, school and everyday life. I want you to know what you’re booking, understand the realities of the destination and choose somewhere that gives you the best chance of having the holiday you’ve been imagining.

Sometimes good travel advice means telling you not to book the holiday you originally asked me for.

And I’m absolutely OK with losing a sale if the alternative is selling you the wrong holiday.
