One of the most iconic sights in Krabi - the traditional Thai long-tail boat. 🇹🇭
Known in Thai as *Ruea Hang Yao*, these wooden boats became widespread in the 20th century, when local boat builders began fitting traditional hulls with car or truck engines connected to a long propeller shaft the “long tail” that gives the boat its name. Today, they are still used for fishing and local transport, as well as trips to Krabi’s islands, lagoons and hidden beaches.
The colourful ribbons tied around the bow are not simply decorations. They are traditionally placed there to honour Mae Ya Nang, the guardian spirit of the boat. Many Thai boat owners believe she protects the vessel, its captain and passengers, bringing good luck and a safe journey across the sea.
So, the next time you see a long-tail boat in Krabi, take a closer look at its bow, you are seeing not only a beautiful boat, but also a living part of Thai culture and maritime tradition.
