✨ Songkran 2024: A Journey Through Tradition 🌊🎉

As Songkran comes to a close, let’s cherish the memories and the deep-rooted traditions that make this festival the heart of Thailand. Songkran marks the Thai New Year and is a time of renewal and cleansing 🌿🔄.

The name ‘Songkran’ comes from an ancient language called Sanskrit, meaning ‘to move into’ or ‘to pass into’. Each April, this signifies the sun’s shift from Aries to Ta**us, known as the Great Songkran, ushering in the new year 🌞♉.

Originating from a Hindu spring festival in ancient India, Songkran celebrates the new harvest season. It’s not just celebrated in Thailand but is the most famous of similar festivals across Southeast Asia 🌍✨.

Running officially from April 13 to 15, the celebrations often extend for a whole week in some places. The first day is for cleaning homes and public spaces like temples to wash away bad luck 🧼🏠. People pour scented water on Buddha statues at temples, carefully on the torso to show respect 🙏💦.

The next day, people prepare food and gifts for monks. It’s also a time to honor elders. Young people wash their parents’ feet with scented water in a heartfelt ceremony to receive their blessings 👣💧. Families enjoy building sand stupas at temples, a fun and spiritual activity 🏖️🕌.

On the third day, everyone starts with a temple visit, offering food and clothes to monks and engaging in rituals to bring good luck for the year 🍛👕🙏.

Fragrant floral garlands are a beautiful part of the festivities, made from jasmine, white champaca, and roses, given to elders as a sign of love and respect 🌸💐.
