Bangkok, Thailand – Bangkok’s Chinatown, lit up by red lanterns and decorative banners to celebrate the Lunar New Year holidays, is bustling.

As the region welcomed the Year of the Dragon last weekend, ethnic Chinese Thais thronged temples to light candles and pray for good fortune.

Inside the glowing red interior of Wat Mangkon Kamalawat – the largest Chinese temple in Bangkok – women wore traditional cheongsam dresses and took photos with their loved ones.

The tourism industry in Thailand had a strong start in 2024, with nearly 4 million foreign arrivals in January.

China, Malaysia, Russia, India, and Laos were the top countries of origin for visitors. Factors contributing to the increase in travel to Thailand included the lifting of outbreak restrictions in China and the Thai Government’s free visa policy. Thailand has also been working to build positive relations with ASEAN members to promote mutual tourism, including the “One Destination” project involving six countries.

Trip.com Group’s data shows that Thailand is expected to experience a 44.3% increase in total trip expenditure for inbound bookings during this year’s Chinese New Year compared to the same period last year.

TAT Proposes Extended Visa-Free Stays to Boost Tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is urging the government to extend the visa-free stay period for long-haul tourists from the United States and Europe to 90 days to boost the country’s tourism revenue from these regions to 40% in 2024. The initiative, aimed at increasing the average duration of stay and spending per trip, comes as part of TAT's strategy to enhance the tourism sector's contribution to the economy.

Thailand currently facilitates tourist visas on arrival for nationals from over 60 countries, allowing them a 30-day stay. The proposal to extend this period follows the success of a temporary 90-day visa granted to Russian tourists last November, which significantly benefited the tourism sector.

In the past year, over 100,000 foreign tourists, predominantly from the US, the UK, Sweden, and Germany, applied for a 60-day visa. The proposed extension to 90 days is expected to generate at least a million additional room nights across the country.
