Krathong🎆🎆

The Loy Krathong celebration, or the festival of lamps which this year falls on Friday, 19th of November. This nationwide festival is celebrated across south east Asia and is known to mark the end of the monsoon season.

Thais float a ‘krathong’ or small decorated bowls sometimes made of banana leaf, styrofoam or bread with a candle or incense sticks on top and float it on the river with a prayer to thank the water goddess or Mother Ganga for having water during the year as well as asking forgiveness for contaminating it. Sometimes a small coin is added as an offering to the water spirits.

Others believe that the krathong is a metaphor for floating away all the frustration and negative energy. Small pieces of hair or nails or even some old pieces of clothing are often added to the krathong to get rid of all the bad spirits of the past. In doing so, Thais also welcome the spirit of ‘sanook’ or good vibes into their lives.

Also known as Thailand’s Valentine’s day, Loy Krathong is the most romantic day of the calendar year. There is also a tradition for couples to float one single krathong together as a romantic gesture and watch it disappear out of sight as the candle is still lit signifying a year of good luck and togetherness.

How do I get a krathong, you may ask, and they are sold all over from small mom and pop convenience stores to street side vendors on this day. All you need is to get yourself one and find a water source and get floating.

Tips on how to enjoy Loy Krathong

Choose a krathong made of biodegradable materials such as banana trunk or bread for a more eco friendly environment.
Try walking along the canals and riverside to enjoy the sound and lights as well as to avoid traffic.
If you’re visiting a temple, don’t wear revealing clothing and you can buy your krathong there and also make a donation.
Be respectful to your surroundings, after all it is a religious festival.
