ASEAN and Korea Strengthen Critical Minerals Exploration Capacity through In-situ Training in Thailand

PHITSANULOK, Thailand, 4 September 2026 – The 2nd In-situ Training Course under the project “Critical Minerals Management and Strategy for Sustainable Environment in ASEAN” was held from 24 August to 4 September 2026 in Phitsanulok and Phichit Provinces, Thailand. The activity was supported by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF) and implemented by the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM).

The training officially opened on 24 August 2026 with a welcome address by Mr. Nuntawat Himaman, Director of DPIM Office 5, followed by a congratulatory address from Mr. Yongzheng Ma, Director of the CCOP Technical Secretariat, and opening remarks by Dr. Soocheol Jeong of KIGAM. Dr. Young Joo Lee of KIGAM also presented the overall progress of the project during the opening session.

The two-week programme combined classroom lectures, field exercises and data processing. Participants received hands-on training in geological mapping, geochemical surveys, electrical resistivity surveys, satellite image and GIS processing, drone and ground magnetic surveys, mobile-based data integration, and exploration database applications. Field activities were conducted at the Chatree Gold Mine in Phichit Province, allowing participants to apply exploration techniques under real field conditions.

The training brought together technical professionals from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam, together with experts and instructors from KIGAM and specialised technical organisations.

A key feature of the course was its field-to-digital workflow, where participants collected geological and geophysical data in the field and subsequently processed, integrated and interpreted the results using modern digital tools and database platforms. The training strengthened practical capacity in applying advanced technologies for critical mineral exploration.

The course concluded on 4 September 2026 with a wrap-up seminar and certificate awarding ceremony, contributing to stronger technical cooperation between ASEAN and Korea and supporting the sustainable exploration and management of critical mineral resources in the region.
