The Monk's Trail is one of the most popular hiking routes in Chiang Mai because it's easy to walk, shaded, and has a beautiful destination: Wat Phra Lat (Sakitakhami), located in the middle of the forest.
Preparation Information (Updated 2026)
Starting Point: Located at the end of Suthep Road, behind Chiang Mai University, near Channel 7 TV station.
Distance and Time:
To Wat Phra Lat: Approximately 1.5 - 2 km, taking about 30-45 minutes to walk up.
To Doi Suthep: If you want to continue from Wat Phra Lat to Phra That Doi Suthep, you will need to walk another approximately 2 km (the path is steeper than the first part).
Fee: Entrance fee starts at 20 baht for Thais and 100 baht for foreigners.
Opening Hours: The temple is open from 06:00 - 18:00. The trail can be walked year-round, but it is recommended to start in the morning to avoid the heat.
