ใครจะคิดว่าบนยอดดอย ในป่าลึกแห่งนี้เคยมีชุมชนชาวเหมืองแร่ในอดีตที่เต็มไปด้วยสีสันและความมีชีวิตชีวา เป็นแหล่งรวมของความหลากหลายทั้งทางเชื้อชาติ เผ่าพันธุ์ ศาสนา และขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี ณ ที่นี้เคยมีชาวเนปาล อินเดีย มอญ ลาว-พม่า กระเหรี่ยง และพม่า ที่มาร่วมใช้ชีวิตวิถีชาวเหมืองแร่ด้วยกัน แต่เมื่อเหมืองแร่ปิดตัวลง ความเข้มข้นของชุมชนแห่งนี้ก็ได้จางหายไปกับกาลเวลา
พ่อ หรือลุงปุ๊ของ
ชุมชนหมู่บ้านปิล๊อก เริ่มใช้ชีวิตชาวเหมืองแร่ตั้งแต่อายุ 19ปี โดยเริ่มทำงานครั้งแรกที่เหมืองแร่ผาแป2 ต่อมาพ่อได้ทำการสำรวจและค้นพบเหมืองแร่แห่งใหม่ตั้งชื่อว่าเหมืองแร่พัฒนากาญจน์ ซึ่งเป็นบ้านที่พ่ออยู่มาจวบจนทุกวันนี้ พ่อกับแม่ของเราจึงมีความรักความผูกพันกับสถานที่แห่งนี้มาก แม้เหมืองแร่จะปิดตัวลงไปกว่า30ปี พ่อกับแม่ก็ยังคงใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในป่าบนยอดดอยแห่งนี้ พ่อรักต้นไม้และปลูกต้นไม้ไว้มากมายโดยเฉพาะพืชที่ให้ผลเพราะเราอยู่ห่างไกลชุมชน บ้านเราจึงมีต้นกาแฟ ชาอูหลง มะม่วงชนิดต่างๆ ขนุน ส้ม ลิ้นจี่ มังคุด และทุเรียน มะม่วงบางต้นมีอายุเกือบ 70ปี ตอนนี้พ่อก็อายุ 84 แล้ว
พ่อมีความปรารถนาที่จะส่งต่อคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์และเรื่องราวตำนานเหมืองแร่เก่าแก่แห่งนี้ให้แก่ชนรุ่นหลังเพื่อการเรียนรู้และเพื่อประโยชน์แก่ชุมชนเหมืองปิล๊อก จึงได้ซ่อมแซมและบูรณะโรงล้างแร่เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ขนาดเล็กเพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์และเป็นต้นแบบของการท่องเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์ของคนกับป่า
นี่คือเหตุที่ทำให้พวกเราลูกๆทุกคนช่วยกันสร้างบ้านพักของครอบครัวหลังนี้ขึ้นมา เพื่อมาอยู่ดูแลพ่อแม่และใช้ชีวิตบั้นปลายในป่าใหญ่แห่งนี้ ที่เป็นบ้านเกิดของพวกเราทุกคน ไอเดียการทำโฮมสเตย์จึงได้เกิดตามมา บ้านพักของเราจึงไม่ใช่รีสอร์ต หรือโรงแรมหรูหรา

A legacy of family, tradition and community. My father operated a mine and my mother managed the multi-cultural community of workers and their families. My siblings and I lived with family in Bangkok for school but always longed for the day we would return to be here in our mountain home. The scars of the mining activity have mostly healed and only remnants can be found in the overgrowth of the once vibrant melting of ethnicities; Nepalese, Indians, Laotian-Burmese, Mon, Karen, and many from Myanmar. Many still have ties to Pilok and revere my parents but most have scattered in all directions of Thailand. The main house in which my parents live has been in use since it was built in 1965. In all those many decades other structures have been either taken down or fallen in disrepair due to sitting idle and unused. The entire family still comes up for regular gatherings but as the family has grown it was getting crowded in the main house on holidays. We decided to work together as a family and remodel the old storage and bunk house to make room for all of us to visit comfortably. During construction we discovered so many pieces of our childhood and the once productive mine. We could see the pain in our father’s face to see his history in a pile destined for the trash bin. We decided to spend extra money and refurbish the mineral processing plant and store for display all the bits and pieces we could gather from the entire mountain. The pain in my father’s face turned to pride when he saw the results, a beautiful multi room two story guesthouse and a mining museum. In keeping with my parents’ big generous hearts it was decided we would share the space with a select few people when we are not gathered here. We are honored to host groups of students and teach them about mining, let them explore the world of astronomy and nature. We also open our home to individuals and groups who want to experience and connect with nature in its most wondrous splendor. We live on the top of a mountain with the purest air to breathe and the sound of the wind rustling through the trees accompanied by the songs of birds to entertain. This place is not a resort or a fancy hotel; it is the warm home of a family who built it with passion, love and hard work.
