Lamai wasn’t always known for resorts and beach holidays. For generations, life here revolved around fishing, coconut farming and the sea. Small boats lined the coast, local families lived from what the island provided, and coconuts were at the heart of Koh Samui’s economy long before tourism arrived.

That history has not disappeared. You can still catch glimpses of it in the long tail boats, local markets, temples and traditions that remain part of everyday life on the island, making Lamai more interesting once you know what was here before.

One of Samui’s more unexpected places is hidden in the hills, away from the beaches the island is usually known for.

In 1976, at the age of 77, local durian farmer Nim Thongsuk began creating what is now known as the Secret Buddha Garden, or Tarnim Magic Garden. Over the years, he filled the hillside with figures inspired by Buddhism, mythology, animals and everyday life, continuing the work until his death at 91.

Today, the sculptures sit quietly among dense jungle, streams and small waterfalls, with moss gradually becoming part of the stone itself.

A very different side of Samui, where lush rainforest takes the spotlight from the sea.
