Yesterday, the guesthouse owner noticed that Tama was keeping one eye closed when he came to eat. She tried to get closer to check on him, but Tama refused to let her catch him, so she called me over.
When I checked him properly, I realized both eyes were irritated, but the left eye was much worse — swollen, red, and he could barely open it at all. So we decided to take him to the vet right away.
After examining him, the vet said both eyes had conjunctivitis, but the left eye was significantly more inflamed. There was also a superficial corneal ulcer on the left eye. The vet suspects Tama may have gotten sprayed in the face by some kind of toxic insect or animal, and the scratch on the cornea was probably caused by him rubbing or scratching his eye too much. He also had a mild fever, so the vet gave him an injection to help bring it down as well.
At first, the vet suggested I take him home, but because I still have to work and can’t monitor him constantly, we discussed it with the vet and decided to let Tama stay at the clinic for observation for 3 days first.
He has to wear a cone to stop him from scratching his eye, because if the ulcer becomes deeper, there’s a risk he could lose vision. During these first few days, he also needs eye drops every 2 hours plus oral medication, so staying at the clinic is the safest option for now. After 3 days, we’ll see what to do next depending on his condition.
Tama really is such a troublesome little boy… first his claws, now his eye 🥲 He gets injured so often, and every vet visit costs so much too.
Please recover quickly, Tama 💙🐱
