Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat, the spiritual heart of Southern Thailand, had remained on UNESCO's Tentative List for more than 14 years (since 2012).
Now, thanks to the unwavering dedication and collaboration of the Thai people, UNESCO has officially inscribed Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site! 🎉
This marks Thailand's newest World Heritage Site and the first in Southern Thailand.
💡 Why was it recognized as a World Heritage Site?
UNESCO recognized the site's Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) under two key criteria:
1️⃣ A crossroads of cultural exchange for over 1,500 years
Situated along ancient maritime trade routes, the temple reflects the exchange of art, religion, and architectural influences from India, Java, the Mon Kingdom, and Sri Lanka. Its iconic bell-shaped stupa, crowned with solid gold, became a prototype for many stupas across the region.
2️⃣ A living cultural heritage
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan remains a vibrant center of faith and tradition. Its enduring cultural practices, including the Hae Pha Khuen That (Cloth Procession to the Sacred Stupa), continue to thrive alongside Nora, Southern Thailand's traditional performing art, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. These traditions have been passed down continuously for centuries.

"มรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรม" อย่างเป็นทางการเรียบร้อยแล้ว!
ถือเป็นมรดกโลกแห่งใหม่ของไทย และเป็นแห่งแรกของภาคใต้! 🎉
💡ทำไมถึงได้รับการยอมรับให้เป็นมรดกโลก?
UNESCO ได้พิจารณาคุณค่าความโดดเด่นอันเป็นสากล
ผ่าน 2 เกณฑ์หลัก
1️⃣ ศูนย์กลางการแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรม 1,500 ปี
ตั้งอยู่บนเส้นทางการค้าทางทะเลโบราณ
หลอมรวมศิลปะ-ศาสนาจากอินเดีย ชวา มอญ และลังกา
เกิดเป็น "พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ทรงระฆังแบบนครศรีธรรมราช"
ยอดหุ้มทองคำแท้ ที่กลายเป็นต้นแบบเจดีย์
