"Songkran Festival"
First of all, let's talk about the history of Songkran Festival.
Songkran festival is one of the most important festivals that has been performed for a long time, not only in Thailand but also in other countries such as Laos and Cambodia.
It is also known as Thai Traditional New Year's Day, which falls during April of 13th - 15th every year.
The word "Songkran" derives from Sanskrit language and means to pass or to move into.
I know that Songkran is one of Thailand's National Holidays.
During this time, I saw people from rural areas, who work in a city like Bangkok, return home to celebrate the festival.
Do you know of any activities during Songkran Festival?
Yes, sure...Songkran is very famous.
We know that most of people splash the water on each other.
But I also know Songkran tradition is an important custom for Thai families, community and religion.
It is a great opportunity for family members to gather together, so...what do you usually do when you see each other on that day? We express our respect to our elders by pouring scented water onto our parents' and grandparents' hands. The elders in turn wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity, so Songkran Day is also Family Day.
This special day gives value to religion because we gain a lot of merit by offering alms to monks, meditating, listening to sermons. Carrying sand to temple and forming sand pagodas, as well as bathing rite for Buddha images and the monks.After all mentioned activities now we can joyfully splash water on each other.
