Today is the 18th of August, Vietnam Veterans' Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

The Vietnam war was a contentious conflict and as a result, the sacrifices made by those who served are often overlooked.

The issues faced by Vietnam veterans are captured succinctly by this quote from Geoffrey Jones, 3 RAR, in Vietnam 1968, reflecting after returning home, found on the Australian war memorial website.

"Back home you don't publicize the fact that you were in Vietnam, as, in discussing the war you could either be praised for keeping the 'commies' at bay or accused of being a baby killer. It's a lot easier to avoid the subject."

For this very reason, we should make a special effort to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by Australians during this conflict.

Because, as Nicholas Quigley, 104 Signal Squadron (National Serviceman), in Vietnam 1968-9, reflecting on effects of service in Vietnam, explains.

'The youth of today should look at the men and women on ANZAC and Long Tan Day, these same men and women at age 19+ were at the battle fronts of the world. Be thankful that it is not your son's name on the granite wall at Canberra.'

Very sad story of an 11 year old boy who died on the 9th of June 1918, when a vehicle carrying returned WW1 servicemen in Brisbane, swerved into him to avoid ramming another car in the procession.

Hector Vasyl, was among a crowd of people welcoming sick and injured soldiers travelling to a military hospital at Kangaroo Point.

Hector Vasyl would use his pocket money to buy things for the returning troops.

Over a 100 years later, members of Brisbane's Greek community still lay wreaths every ANZAC Day at a stone memorial, commemorating Hector Vasyl’s short life.

The memorial, fixed on an abutment at the southern end of Brisbane's Victoria Bridge, where the accident happened, carries a likeness of Hector Vasyl’s face cast in metal and an inscription that reads:

"During his brief sojourn on Earth he devoted much of his time to patriotic work for Australian soldiers during the Great European War.

"In his veins ran the heroic blood of Greece, and in the breast of a child he carried the heart of a man."

The photograph is of his memorial and came from Wikipedia.
