🐧💞The month of love is fast approaching, and when we think of animals that symbolize love, the hornbill often comes to mind. This is because of their unique behavior of forming lifelong pairs. Their bonding typically begins around mid-January and February. During this time, hornbills stay as a couple, with the male searching for a nesting site while the female follows to inspect and decide.
🐧💞Once the pair finds a suitable nesting hole, and it's time to lay eggs, the female will regurgitate food mixed with her droppings, wood shavings, and dirt to seal the entrance. She leaves only a small opening for the male to feed her. Then, she seals herself inside the cavity to incubate the eggs and care for the chicks for about 3-4 months. During this period, if the male fails to bring food within three days (perhaps due to being killed by humans or captured), the female will break open the entrance to forage for food, abandoning the nest and leaving the chicks to die. In some cases, both the mother and the chicks may die inside the nest because of the female’s weakened state. If either the male or female dies, the surviving partner will never find another mate, remaining solitary for the rest of their life. This remarkable behavior, so different from other animals, has made the hornbill a symbol of true love in the wild.
