The Covid-19 crisis has left Khao Sok largely unharmed. There have been no confirmed cases, and since the workforce is all local, there have been no mass migrations to and from home towns and villages. Of course the rest of the world hasn’t been so fortunate, and the resulting lack of tourism income has hit a lot of businesses hard. One area hit by the absence of travellers are the locally run elephant sanctuaries that Riverfront Resort is so proud to support. Elephants are not easy to care for, and require huge amounts of food every day. Without income, feeding these gentle giants can become a challenge. If you are planning a Khao Sok trip soon, we hope that you will consider booking a trip to one of the great elephant sanctuaries in Khao Sok. They could use the support, and we can all use more time with elephants :)

If there is one thing made more difficult during the Monsoon season, it is hiking. Mud and slippery stones make paths more challenging, and the rain can dampen spirits. However, those willing to endure the mud and the wetness will discover a forest absolutely bursting with life and energy! This is the time of year when the forest explodes into vigorous growth and reproduction, making it a wonderful time for a guided hike!

Let’s start the month off at one of our favorite places! While Cheow Larn Lake might seem diminished by the monsoon season, this remains a wonderful time to visit :) Crowds are small, it’s not overly hot, and the prevalence of mist adds a wonderfully mysterious feeling to the whole place! A lake trip is definitely something to look into during your Khao Sok adventure!

Amidst the chaos and confusion created by a global health crisis, small, rural Thai villages have remained as calm and serene as ever. The slow-paced, self-sufficient approach to life here is a huge difference from what most of our guests are used to. This is just one reason we’ve begun working with locals to offer village tours, and we’d highly recommend one to anyone interested in learning about and experiencing a bit more of the real southern Thailand!

At Khao Sok Riverfront, we put a large emphasis on giving back to the community. We hire local staff and provide them with hospitality training that will benefit them long after they leave us. We use local guides who know the Khao Sok rainforest because they grew up in it. We partner with local families to create community-focused tourism opportunities that benefit communities directly.
