One of the most spectacular and colourful annual events to be experienced throughout South Thailand is the Vegetarian Festival, to be held this year from October 8-17th. Celebrations, taking place over the ten-day period during the ninth lunar month, are widely observed by Chinese people, who believe that, by undertaking a strict vegetarian diet and performing special rituals they will gain religious merit and attract good luck for the future.

In Phuket, there will be lavish street processions, with some entranced participants carrying out such acts of self-mortification as piercing their bodies with sharp metal spikes, while others walk barefoot over beds of red-hot embers. Offerings are made at temples, to the noise of drums and exploding fire crackers. Hotels and restaurants present menus of traditional Chinese vegetarian cuisine over the period. Go Vacation Thailand will be pleased to make arrangements for individual travellers or groups to attend this amazing festival.
