The Global Geoparks Network Celebrates the International Day of Caves and Karst

Celebrate and Protect the World's Karst Systems!
The UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst (IDCK) is an annual observance on 13 September, dedicated to raising global awareness of caves and karst landscapes. Caves are naturally formed underground voids found worldwide, while karst landscapes form through the dissolution of soluble rocks, shaping distinctive surface and subsurface features. These environments provide vital resources, including drinking water for over a billion people, preserve unique biodiversity, and hold invaluable geological and cultural records.
The Global Geoparks Network Executive Board in its 176 session on June 3rd decided to invite all UNESCO Global Geoparks to celebrate UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst (IDCK) on September 13th, a moment dedicated to recognizing the immense value of Caves and Karst landscapes and their essential contribution to the well-being of people and the planet.
Caves and Karst landscapes are vital yet often underappreciated environments.
They host extraordinary biodiversity, provide drinking water resources and support livelihoods of millions of people. They are also source of cultural heritage, natural resources, and recreational opportunities.
However, these fragile environments face increasing threats from climate change, land degradation, and unsustainable practices. Protecting Caves and Karst landscapes is therefore crucial for building resilience and ensuring a sustainable future for the communities living in Karst environment.
UNESCO Global Geoparks host a large number of Caves and Karst landscapes exceptional territories for understanding, preserving, and responsibly managing Caves and Karst landscapes.

dedicated to education, conservation, and public awareness.
The Global Geoparks Network encourages all Geoparks around the world to join in the celebration of UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst (IDCK) and promote Caves and Karst protection, conservation and management through science, education, and community engagement. By strengthening collaboration and inspiring local action, UNESCO Global Geoparks contribute to safeguarding Cave and Karst environments and enhancing the resilience of the communities who depend on them.
We are pleased to invite all the UNESCO Global Geoparks to participate in the celebration by sending representative photos of the most significant Caves and Karst landforms and landscapes in their territories in order to create a series of promotional tools for this Global celebration.
We also invite all the UNESCO Global Geoparks to organize events at their territories to celebrate the UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst with their communities.
The Global Geoparks Network, the Regional Geopark Networks and the National Geopark Networks will organize events to celebrate the UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst during next autumn.
The GGN will participate also in the events marking the first celebration of the UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst, to be held in Postojna, Slovenia, from 10 to 13 September 2026.
These events represent the symbolic and official launch of the global observance of the International Day of Caves and Karst, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2025, which will be held under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Nataša Pirc Musar, and under the patronage of UNESCO, with the support and cooperation of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO, Postojna Cave, Škocjan Caves Park, the Municipality of Postojna, the Municipality of Pivka, and the Speleological Association of Slovenia.

🌏🍽️ ททท. ชวน “หลงรสสตูล” ชิมเมนูดึกดำบรรพ์ เชื่อมเรื่องราวจีโอพาร์คสตูล–ลังกาวี 🇹🇭🤝🇲🇾

การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) สำนักงานสตูล ร่วมกับจังหวัดสตูลและภาคีเครือข่าย จัดงาน “Chill-Eat-Art : หลงรสสตูล (Fall for Satun Flavors)” วันที่ 14–16 สิงหาคม 2569 ณ พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สตูล (คฤหาสน์กูเด็น) ถ่ายทอดเสน่ห์ของสตูลผ่านอาหาร ศิลปะ วัฒนธรรม และเรื่องราวของผืนแผ่นดิน

🦖🍴 ไฮไลต์สำคัญคือ “เมนูดึกดำบรรพ์” ที่นำฟอสซิลและมรดกธรณีของ อุทยานธรณีโลกสตูล (Satun UNESCO Global Geopark) มาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจสร้างสรรค์อาหาร อาทิ ยำไข่ไทรโลไบต์ น้ำพริกสาหร่ายสโตรมาโตไลต์ นอติลอยด์ชุบแป้งทอด นอติลอยด์น้ำดำ แบรคิโอพอดผัดฉ่า และขนมดาวล้อมเดือนสะเทือนไทรโลไบต์ เปลี่ยนเรื่องราวกว่า 500 ล้านปี ให้กลายเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ “ชิม เรียนรู้ และจดจำ” ผ่านอาหาร

ภายในงานยังเชื่อมเครือข่ายกับ Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark ประเทศมาเลเซีย ซึ่งนำผลิตภัณฑ์จีโอพาร์คและงานสร้างสรรค์จากอัตลักษณ์ของพื้นที่มาร่วมจัดแสดง สะท้อนพลังของเครือข่ายจีโอพาร์ค สตูล–ลังกาวี ที่สามารถต่อยอดมรดกของผืนโลกสู่การท่องเที่ยว อาหาร ผลิตภัณฑ์ชุมชน และเศรษฐกิจท้องถิ่นอย่างยั่งยืน

🌏🍽️ TAT invites visitors to “Fall for Satun Flavors” — tasting prehistoric-inspired dishes while connecting the stories of Satun and Langkawi Geoparks. 🇹🇭🤝🇲🇾

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Satun Office, together with Satun Province and local partners, presents “Chill-Eat-Art: Fall for Satun Flavors”, held from 14–16 August 2026 at the Satun National Museum (Kuden Mansion), showcasing Satun through food, art, culture and the stories of its land.

🦖🍴 One of the highlights is the “Prehistoric Menu”, inspired by fossils and geological heritage of Satun UNESCO Global Geopark. Creative dishes inspired by trilobites, stromatolites, nautiloids and brachiopods transform stories dating back more than 500 million years into experiences visitors can taste, learn and remember.

The event also connects with Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Malaysia, showcasing geopark products and locally inspired creations. This Satun–Langkawi connection demonstrates how geological heritage can be transformed into meaningful tourism experiences, local products and opportunities for community-based economies.

🌏🌿 Satun UNESCO Global Geopark ร่วมเรียนรู้และสืบสานเรื่องราววิถีมานิ

วันที่ 7 สิงหาคม 2569 ผู้แทนอุทยานธรณีโลกสตูล เข้าร่วมงาน “MANIQ CHRONICLES: THE JUNGLE’S LEGACY – เทศกาลสารคดีและวัฒนธรรม ครั้งที่ 2” ณ โรงเรียนบ้านป่าพน อำเภอมะนัง จังหวัดสตูล ซึ่งเป็นกิจกรรมที่ ริเริ่มและจัดขึ้นโดยชุมชนและเครือข่ายในพื้นที่ เพื่อถ่ายทอดเรื่องราว วิถีชีวิต ภูมิปัญญา และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชาวมานิกับผืนป่า

กิจกรรมนี้เกิดขึ้นในช่วงใกล้กับ 9 สิงหาคม – วันชนพื้นเมืองโลก (International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples) ซึ่งในปี 2026 เครือข่าย Geoparks Network (GGN) ร่วมสื่อสารแนวคิด
“Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures”

🇬🇧 Satun UNESCO Global Geopark joins the Maniq community in celebrating local knowledge and cultural heritage.

On 7 August 2026, representatives of Satun UNESCO Global Geopark participated in “MANIQ CHRONICLES: THE JUNGLE’S LEGACY – The 2nd Documentary and Cultural Festival”, a community- and network-led event held at Ban Pa Phon School, Manang District, Satun Province.

Taking place just ahead of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August, the event connects with the 2026 message shared by Geoparks Network (GGN):
“Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures.”

Satun UNESCO Global Geopark is proud to join this learning space that celebrates the connections between people, culture, nature and the land — values at the heart of UNESCO Global Geoparks. 🌏🌿

UNESCO Global Geoparks celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, and use this occasion to bring awareness to Indigenous Peoples within the world's Geoparks.

UNESCO Global Geoparks can provide a respectful place for the Indigenous Peoples of the World that honours and respects their cultural contributions, their language, customs, and their deep understanding of the natural environment.
The knowledge and culture of Indigenous Peoples enrich our Global Geoparks.
On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Global Geoparks seek to lift up the voices of Indigenous Peoples and to celebrate their knowledge.

More than 30% of the UNESCO Global Geoparks have in their territory an indigenous population mainly In America, Asia and Africa.

UNESCO Global Geoparks provide more visibility and develop more action to valorize and protect their Indigenous people.
People which have a unique intimate and millennial relationship with the Earth.
A relationship deeply embeded in their language, knowledge, culture, cosmogonie, practices.

To celebrate this International day, we invite UNESCO Global Geoparks with indigenous population to post in facebook quality photos, videos and project materials they have developped and thus to provide clear strong support and visibility.
