Back to the little things… figs, feathers and shooting stars. ✨

Our little village is getting back to itself after the trauma of the recent fires. We’ve had a few days of R&R and are slowly picking up pace again.

Birthday celebrations all round over the next few days, so fun and lots of nice things ahead. Stargazing last night was special 💫 Those shooting stars were amazing!

So I got up extra early this morning to get to the fig tree before the daily visitors got their share. If only I were eight feet tall… can you imagine the huge, plump figs I could collect from the top? 😂

For those of you who pick figs, you often get more than you bargain for. The odd bee, strangely shaped insects, grasshoppers… but to my delight, amongst mine was a little white feather. I love finding a feather. 🤍

Some say a white feather is a little sign of peace, protection or reassurance. Whatever you believe, it was rather lovely to find one there this morning.

Thanks to Cherie Denham for reminding me just how much can be done with fig leaves. By the way Cherie’s fig-leaf ice cream sounds delicious.

I’m going to use mine for a lamb dish. The leaves should perfume the lamb beautifully while protecting it as it cooks. I’m thinking garlic, kekik, lemon, olive oil and a little sumac, keeping everything simple enough not to bury the flavour of the lamb.

So let’s see how that turns out for our celebration dinner…

Although judging by this morning, first I need either a ladder or a growth spurt!
Have a fabulous Sunday everyone🤍

Nature has already designed the perfect food for hot weather…

Summer has always known the answer.☀️

When temperatures soar, nature quietly changes our food on the table.

Water-rich tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon. Fresh herbs picked by the handful. Green beans, peppers, figs and lemons. A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a little beyaz peynir, and plenty of water.

The Mediterranean diet isn’t a trend. It’s a way of eating that generations have followed, long before anyone counted calories. In the heat, our bodies often crave foods that are lighter, colourful and naturally hydrating. Also keep drinking plenty of fluids, make your own lemonade… perfect to keep in the fridge.

Cucumber helps replace fluids.

Tomatoes provide vitamin C and lycopene, especially when enjoyed with olive oil.

Fresh herbs don’t just add flavour, they’re packed with antioxidants.

Beans provide gentle, slow-release energy.

Watermelon is around 90% water, making it one of summer’s perfect foods.

Good olive oil provides healthy fats that help your body absorb important nutrients from vegetables.

This is how I love to cook. Seasonal ingredients, simple recipes and meals that nourish without weighing you down. Sometimes the healthiest plate is also the simples and full of flavour.

What is your favourite food to eat during the heat summer?

A Little Update from Yeşilüzümlü

This morning feels very different.

The fire is out, the electricity and internet are back, and the air is noticeably cooler.

The hillside tells the story of the last few days, it shows how incredibly hard so many people worked to protect our community and the village.

Today, I’m feeling better… and cautiously optimistic 🤞
Thank you to everyone who kept us safe. 🤍

A little update from Yeşilüzümlü. 🤍

Firstly, thank you so much for all your messages over the past couple of days. They have meant a great deal.

Electricity and water have now been restored, and we’re hoping our internet will be back later today. Things are gradually returning to normal and we’re at Sumak this morning getting everything ready to welcome today’s cookery workshop guests.

Driving into Fethiye earlier really brought home the scale of the recent fires. Seeing the scorched hillsides is incredibly sad and a reminder of how much has been lost. Emergency services remain on the outskirts of the affected areas, keeping a watchful eye, and we are so grateful for their tireless work and dedication in protecting our communities.

As we move forward, can I gently remind everyone to please take extra care with pets and our beautiful forests. Never discard ci******es or litter, especially during these hot, dry summer months. Small actions really can make a huge difference.

For now, everything here is calm, the village is peaceful once again, and we’re looking forward to spending the day doing what we love… cooking together at Sumak.🧑‍🍳

Stay safe everyone, and thank you again for thinking of us. 🤍

A little update from Yeşilüzümlü. 🤍

Thank you all so much for your messages and concern.

After the fire burned through the night, the emergency services worked tirelessly to bring it under control. Unfortunately, it flared up again today, and helicopters have been back overhead all day, supported by local people bringing water tankers to keep them supplied. The response has been incredible.

We are all safe. We do currently have no electricity, so communication is a little difficult, but please don’t worry if I don’t reply straight away.

For everyone asking, there are no fires in the centre of the village. The biggest help at the moment is for roads to be kept clear so the emergency services can reach where they’re needed as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for every message, kind thought and good wish. We really do appreciate them. Please continue to keep the firefighters, helicopter crews and volunteers in your thoughts. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who has messaged to check on us. 🤍

We are all safe here in Yeşilüzümlü.

There was a large hillside fire overnight, which was a frightening sight, but with daylight the helicopters and fire crews have been working tirelessly and the fire is now being brought under control.

Our thoughts and thanks are with all the emergency services and volunteers who have worked through the night to protect our village.

Time for a little sleep now. Thank you again for your kindness… .

A Very Warm Welcome to Sumak. 🤍

If you’re new here, hoş geldiniz, you’ve arrived at the perfect time.

Before I share recipes and workshop moments, I wanted to introduce you to the ingredients that inspire everything we cook. These are some of the beautiful fruits, vegetables and herbs we source here in Türkiye, fresh from our local markets and producers.

Why Turkish food tastes so good…

Every meal we cook and workshop we run at Sumak starts with a visit to our local markets, where the seasons decide the menu. Sweet peppers still warm from the morning sun. Fabulous fragrant herbs. Tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes. Aubergines in every shade of purple.

It’s one of the reasons every recipe and workshop is a little different, because nature never repeats herself.

Which of these beautiful ingredients would you reach for first? 🍅🌿🍆🌶️🍉

Saturday night, but make it Mediterranean.

Yesterday I spent the day doing what I love most… cooking. By the time I’d finished, my eyes were so heavy with sleep that I didn’t even make it to the final whistle! Waking up this morning to find out England had won was a lovely surprise. Congratulations, England! ⚽🏆

There’s something very special about preparing food. The kitchen comes alive with the aroma of fresh herbs, roasted vegetables and spices, and before long everyone is gathered around the table, sharing good food and great conversation. That’s my happy place. 🤍

On the menu were homemade meatballs, crispy Parmesan roast potatoes and one of my favourite Mediterranean meze dishes…

Roasted Aubergine, Feta, Olive & Tomato Meze

This is one of those recipes that celebrates simple, fresh ingredients. Roasted aubergines, sweet tomatoes, creamy feta, olives, fresh herbs and a beautifully balanced sauce come together to create something far greater than the sum of its parts.

The roasted aubergine melts into the dressing, the feta adds a creamy saltiness, and every mouthful is packed with Mediterranean flavour. It’s one of those dishes that somehow tastes even better with warm crusty bread and good company.

This meze is also one of the dishes we’ll be making together at my upcoming Heart of the Turkish Kitchen workshop at Sumak. I’ll be sharing the techniques, little chef’s tips and flavour combinations that make this recipe so special, so you can confidently recreate it at home.

My little kitchen may not be the biggest, but it’s where some of my happiest moments happen. Seeing people discover Turkish cooking, laugh around the table, learn something new and leave inspired to recreate these dishes at home is what Sumak is all about.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Sunday 😊

A table full of simple foods. A slower start. A Mediterranean way of life.

It isn’t one “superfood” that makes the Mediterranean diet so famous.

It’s the combination.

Healthy olive oil and olives

Tomatoes rich in lycopene

Fresh cucumber for hydration

Herbs full of natural antioxidants

Beyaz peynir providing protein and calcium

Eggs packed with nutrients

Nuts and seeds in moderation

Fresh bread enjoyed alongside everything, not as the whole meal.

Better heart health

Supporting brain function as we age

More stable blood sugar

Reduced inflammation

Better gut health through a wide variety of fresh foods

It isn’t a diet.

It’s simply a way of eating that has evolved over generations. 🤍

It’s time.

Breakfast is rarely rushed.

Food is shared.

Tea is poured.

Conversations begin.

In Türkiye, breakfast often nourishes friendships just as much as it nourishes the body.

It’s about celebrating seasonal produce, local village ingredients and the simple pleasure of eating together.

One table.
Good conversation.
Proper food.

That’s our favourite recipe.

People living in traditional Mediterranean regions have long been studied for their remarkable longevity.

Researchers believe it’s not just the food that matters, but the combination of fresh seasonal ingredients, daily movement, strong social connections and taking time to enjoy meals together.
