Just be wary of what you post to social media, as fines have been handed out to those sharing photos of alcoholic beverages in Turkiye.

The fines totaling 82,244 Turkish Lira were imposed on citizens for sharing images of alcoholic beverages on social media. Legal experts argue that personal posts should be considered within the scope of freedom of expression, emphasizing that the practice is problematic in terms of the principles of equality and legal certainty.

It has raised questions by some such as, "Is sharing alcohol on social media prohibited?" and "Can fines be imposed for personal photos?"

Article 6 of Law No. 4250 on the Monopoly of Spirits and Alcoholic Beverages, which is cited as the basis for the penalties, states that "advertising and promotion of alcoholic beverages to consumers in any way whatsoever" is prohibited.

The same article also prohibits campaigns, promotions, and events that encourage or promote the use and sale of these products.

Those who violate this prohibition may face administrative fines ranging from 103,207 Turkish Lira to 4,130,222 Turkish Lira as of 2026. Article 1 of the law, titled "Purpose and Scope," states that the aim of the regulation is to determine the procedures and principles regarding the production, domestic and foreign purchase and sale, distribution, and pricing of alcoholic beverages.

Nine years after being blocked from offering domestic bookings in Türkiye, online travel giant Booking.com may soon return.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is beginning collecting signatures for a new Culture and Tourism Ministry-backed regulation.

Suspended in 2017 following court rulings over tax evasion and unfair competition, the platform had been restricted to handling foreign travel for Turkish users. The proposed law will clear the way for the travel giant to fully restart domestic and international booking services across Türkiye.

The platform, widely preferred by travelers for holiday planning, currently serves users in Türkiye solely for international reservations. The new framework will clear the path for the platform to re-establish domestic operations, addressing previous legal objections regarding unpaid taxes and unfair commercial advantage.

The legislative initiative follows a legal campaign by the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) seeking court orders to block access to 10 foreign-based online platforms, including Airbnb, Expedia, Hotels.com, Agoda, GetYourGuide, Viator, Isango, ToursByLocals, Trip.com and Musement.

TÜRSAB initiated proceedings against the companies for operating without local registration, licenses or tax compliance, creating severe competitive disadvantages for domestic travel agencies.

Under Turkish law regarding travel agencies, only registered entities are authorized to perform booking, sales, marketing and promotion services.
