I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I really enjoy writing about. Perhaps it’s all the Marie Kondo inspired sorting and tidying to prepare for our move to Amalfi. I’ve found myself reflecting on what it is that sparks joy for me when it comes to writing. I suppose it’s also natural after finishing a huge project like the guidebook. I’m a very visual person and this photo keeps coming back to me.
This is it. This is what captures my attention and inspires me. The photo itself isn’t anything special. It was snapped quickly on my iPhone after digging it out of my bag. I was standing in the gardens next to the town hall in Ravello. A group of smartly dressed people filled the peaceful spot with a joyful air as they waited for a wedding to start very soon nearby. Yet I looked up and in an instant was captivated by that little bell.
Why was it there? How old was it? There must have been a church or chapel there at some point. But where? That building surely doesn’t seem like a church. Who lives under the old bell tower now? Does that bell ever ring?
I snapped this photo to stop the train of thoughts and hurried on with my day. Yet, I find myself still wondering about that bell tower. About that odd building with its salmon colored paint flaking off. This is why I love architecture and why I focused my studies on architectural history. Buildings like this are pieced together over centuries and they tell a story - of the people who lived here, of the people who have traveled here, of a place.
So expect to find more Amalfi Coast inspiration coming your way as I explore in this direction - the intersection of travel, history, and creativity. I hope it will inspire you too!
