We were honoured to host the Opening Reception of the 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul, an evening filled with art, conversation and new perspectives.

Maia Ruth Lee’s “Once we leave a place, is it there?” explores colour, movement and our sense of place through a series of textile banners.

Drawing on obangsaek, the traditional Korean colour scheme associated with five directions and elements, Lee creates a system of orientation connecting colour, movement, direction and our sense of place.

Its journey now continues at Rixos Tersane Istanbul, where it finds a new home in our lobby, on view through 21 March 2027.

Maia Ruth Lee’s “Once we leave a place, is it there?” explores movement, belonging and the traces of migration, transforming marks left by bound fabrics into abstract forms.

The work also reflects on the meanings that flags can hold, from markers of nation and identity to symbols of movement and belonging.

Its journey now continues at Rixos Tersane Istanbul, where it finds a new home in our lobby, on view through 21 March 2027.
