1696 years ago today, on May 11th, 330 AD, the ancient city of Byzantion was reborn as Nova Roma — the New Rome — and became the new capital of the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine the Great.
From a strategic city on the Bosphorus to the heart of an empire that would shape history for more than a millennium, this moment marked the beginning of what the world would come to know as Constantinople.
A city where continents meet, civilizations rise, and history still lives in every stone.
Today, we remember the founding of one of history’s greatest capitals.
