THE PALM THAT REMEMBERS ROYALTY
Some trees are planted in gardens.
Others become part of history.
Standing proudly in the gardens of the Lake Victoria Granada Hotel, Entebbe, this magnificent palm is believed, according to the heritage story preserved by the hotel, to have been planted during the royal visit associated with Queen Elizabeth II in 1958.
Today, in 2026, this palm would be approximately 68 years old.
Think about that for a moment.
When this palm was planted, Entebbe was still part of the British Protectorate of Uganda. Uganda had not yet gained independence. The Lake Victoria Hotel itself was still a relatively young property, having opened in 1948. The hotel would go on to become one of Entebbe's historic landmarks and is documented as having hosted Queen Elizabeth II during her association with Uganda.
And this palm has remained here.
Through independence in 1962.
Through generations of hotel guests.
Through decades of change in Entebbe.
Through the transformation of the hotel itself.
Its trunk carries the marks of time, while its crown continues to reach towards the Ugandan sky.
