A non-profit organisation that connects Volcanoes’ luxury safari lodges to the neighbouring communities and conservation.

The Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) is a non-profit organization that undertakes specific community and conservation activities in and around Volcanoes Safaris Lodges in Uganda and Rwanda. The VSPT works both directly with the community and indirectly with the help of locally based non-profit institutions. The work of the VSPT fits with Volcanoes Safaris’ vision for great ape ecotourism, which primarily aims to link conservation and local communities. The VSPT seeks to support specific activities that enhance the livelihood of local communities and in turn support the survival of the great apes. The objectives of VSPT are achieved through regular donations from Volcanoes Safaris Ltd who contribute a voluntary donation of $100 from every full cost safari purchased. The VSPT welcomes support towards the areas identified and will also consider other areas that could be supported, but due to
administrative limitations cannot accept individual sponsorship of a child in a school or community group, or manage specific donations that fall outside our main projects. We are happy to accept the supply of books and/or school materials to institutions that we are connected to, provided that all administration and costs connected with delivery are met by the donor.

The Bwindi Lodge Tea Project is a community and conservation initiative by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT), created in collaboration with local communities living near the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Local people from the community plant and tend the tea gardens, supporting their livelihoods through the sale of the tea.

The tea plantation serves as a natural buffer between the forest and neighbouring communities, helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict as animals do not feed on tea due to its bitter taste.

Guests staying at the lodge are welcome to go on a tea tour and learn how tea is grown, picked, and traditionally processed in Uganda. The tour also shows how black, green, and white teas are produced and differentiated. At the end of the tour, guests can sample the fine teas while taking in views of the forest.

The Batwa Cultural Heritage Site at Mount Gahinga Lodge was created so the Batwa can preserve their culture and share their forest life with guests staying at the lodge.

The Heritage Trail consists of a demonstration-based herbal garden, a small collection of traditional huts, and a short trail that allows the Batwa to demonstrate to guests how they used to live, hunt, and collect honey and other resources from the forest.

On World Lion Day, we celebrate the rangers, field staff, researchers and conservationists working together to protect Uganda’s lions and secure their future.

At Kyambura Gorge Lodge, our Lion Monitoring Team, led by Dr Aleksander Braczkowski, works alongside Uganda Wildlife Authority to monitor lions and other large carnivores in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The team also responds to human-wildlife conflict and supports Dr Ludwig Siefert and the Uganda Carnivore Program in assisting injured animals.

The team’s daily fieldwork and research provide important insights into the movements, behaviour and health of the lions, helping to inform continued efforts to protect them in the park.

Among the lions the team follows is Jacob, one of the most famous lions in Africa. Jacob has survived a buffalo goring, the poisoning of his entire pride and a poacher’s snare that led to the amputation of his hind leg.

His remarkable story is the subject of the upcoming documentary “The Lion With Nine Lives: Jacob’s Story”, featured in Forbes Online.

Kyambura Gorge, on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda, is at the centre of an important area of avian, primate and wildlife biodiversity in Africa. The 11-kilometre-long gorge is home to an isolated group of 25 of the 'Lost Chimps’ community.

The small population is highly threatened with its tiny gene pool; externally, increasing pressure from human development around the gorge continues to fragment and threaten their habitat.

To help safeguard this unique ecosystem, the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust purchased land to create a three-kilometre buffer zone, reducing human-wildlife conflict while protecting the forest that these remarkable chimpanzees call home.

The Virunga Community and Conservation centre provides practical vocational training in tailoring and weaving for young people living in the neighbouring communities to Virunga Lodge. Through hands-on learning and skills development, the centre equips trainees with an appropriate skill set to go on to gain employment.

Guests staying at the lodge can participate in traditional weaving classes, have custom clothing tailored, or purchase beautifully handmade garments and artisanal products from the gift shop.

Volcanoes Safaris featured in Forbes syndicated to Yahoo

Jacob's place in the Guinness World Records is only part of his story.

For years, researchers with the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust's Kyambura Lion Monitoring Project had suspected that lions were swimming across the Kazinga Channel, but the behaviour had never been documented. Then, under the cover of darkness, Jacob and his brother Tibu swam 1.5 kilometres through crocodile and hippo-filled waters, a remarkable crossing captured by filmmaker Luke Ochse.

Since 2017, the VSPT team, led by Dr Alexander Braczkowski, has monitored Jacob's life in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Having survived a poacher's snare, poisoning and injuries from a buffalo, Jacob has become a symbol of resilience.

Ronald Hagumimana begain his jounery with the Volcanoes Safaris as a housekeeper at Mount Gahinga Lodge before joining the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust in 2022 as the project cordinator .

He works closely with the Batwa community who live in the Gahinga Batwa Village. In 2018, the VSPT built a permanent village for the Batwa community and their families. The village has a community centre and land for agricultural and recreational use to help them start generating their own income.

Ronald leads visits to the village, where guests staying at Mount Gahinga Lodge have the opportunity to learn about the culture, history, and traditions of the Batwa, one of the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rainforest.

Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) has supported the building of a new vocational centre at Sadhguru School, near Kibale Lodge.⁠

The new centre offers students training in carpentry, mechanics, metal work and welding, tailoring and textiles, as well as pottery and clay modelling. The students gain practical skills to help shape their futures.⁠

Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust supports the local Mgahinga Batwa community through the Gahinga Batwa Village. ⁠

Recently ten acres of land was purchased with the generous donation of a previous lodge guest. The new land will have ten new homes as well as land for agricultural and recreational use.⁠

These homes are being built by the Batwa themselves, honoring their deep traditions and cultural heritage through the use of volcanic stone, mud, and locally sourced materials at the heart of the design.⁠

The Kyambura Women’s Coffee Cooperative is a community-based initiative supporting local women through vocational training and sustainable income.⁠

Across 100 acres of land within the Kyambura Gorge Buffer Zone, over 2,500 Arabica and Robusta plants are cultivated, with each harvest carefully processed by hand. The coffee is sold to Volcanoes lodges and served to guests. ⁠
