Welcome to Uganda’s WildPlaces.

For more than 70 years, our family has been exploring the hidden corners of this extraordinary country, seeking out the places that remain wild, remote and wonderfully uncrowded.

Today, WildPlaces Africa is a collection of intimate safari lodges and camps across some of Uganda’s most spectacular wilderness areas.

From the open plains of Kidepo to the misty forests of Bwindi. From the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve to the banks of the Nile. Each lodge has its own story.

One camp. A whole world of wildlife.

At Papa’s Camp, the wilderness does not arrive on a schedule. A pod of hippos surfaces in the Nile. Ugandan kob gather across the grasslands. A lion appears where there was nothing a moment before. Above it all, birds of prey circle the open skies. This is the beauty of being deep in Murchison Falls National Park. There is always something happening. You simply have to look.

From game drives and walks to quiet moments beside the river, every day brings the possibility of seeing something you have never seen before. No crowds. No queues. Just Uganda’s wilderness, doing what it has always done.

Today, we celebrate one of the most extraordinary encounters in the natural world. To sit quietly in the presence of a mountain gorilla is to be reminded that we are visitors in their world.

These forests are their home. Their future depends on protecting the habitats they live in, supporting the people who live alongside them and continuing the conservation work that has helped make the recovery of mountain gorillas possible.

At WildPlaces Africa, we are proud to call Uganda home and to work in a country where wilderness and conservation remain deeply connected.

This World Gorilla Day, we celebrate the gorillas themselves. The young ones playing beneath the forest canopy. The silverbacks watching quietly from the undergrowth. And the wild places that must continue to exist for them. May they always have a forest to call home.

Meet Jonathan Wright.

Founder. Managing Director. And someone whose love for Uganda’s wilderness has shaped an entire lifetime.

Born in Uganda and educated across Kenya, the UK and Canada, Jonathan would probably tell you he would have happily skipped much of it to spend more time back in his favourite spot on the Nile, fishing for Nile Perch.

The creator of both and WildPlaces Africa, Jonathan has spent decades exploring and protecting the places that make Uganda unlike anywhere else.

In this conversation, Jonathan shares the stories, experiences and wild places that have shaped WildPlaces Africa and continue to inspire everything we do.

At Kulu Ora, the wilderness is never something you leave behind when you step inside.
