This week we celebrate the official beginning of autumn! Did you know that chimpanzees also experience seasonal changes in their tropical environments? These seasonal changes lead to lower food availability during some parts of the year. Chimpanzees in human-modified habitats like Bulindi eat cultivated fruits like jackfruit and mangoes, and these may be particularly important when natural forest fruits are out of season. While these cultivated foods are increasingly important to the chimpanzees’ diet as their natural forests dwindle, they can bring chimpanzees into greater conflict with their human neighbors. Friends of Chimps supports BCCP and Chimpanzee Trust Uganda in their efforts to increase awareness about the impacts of habitat loss and decrease conflict between humans and chimpanzees.
