Look closely at the forest floor π³π
Some of the biggest trees in the forest have an impressive support system β buttress roots.
These large, wide roots grow out from the base of certain tropical trees, helping to anchor tall trees in often shallow, nutrient-poor soils. They also spread the treeβs root system over a wider area, helping it access water and nutrients.
Buttress roots are more than just structural support. They create small spaces where insects, fungi and other forest organisms can live, while fallen leaves and organic matter around the roots contribute to the nutrient cycle of the forest.
For children, a forest walk is a chance to turn the outdoors into a classroom β looking at roots, identifying trees, discovering insects and understanding how different parts of the forest work together. π±
At Bushbaby, our forest experiences invite young explorers to look closer, ask questions and learn from nature.
