Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast is a casual luxury accommodation located conveniently between Fallingwater and Deep Creek Lake. Hartzell House was built as a family home c.1870, by Judson Hartzell following his return from the Civil War. The design is fairly uncommon for the time-period - Carpenter Gothic style with little orn

amentation; a very stately home. Innkeepers, Kitty and David Stemac purchased the long vacant home in 2000, and began a series of restoration and renovations that resulted in its current incarnation as a 6 bedroom inn. The original structure now comprises the east-wing of Hartzell House, and retains much of the historic charm while incorporating discrete modern conveniences and safety upgrades. This portion of the house has three guest rooms, one with a private bath, and two (which couples traveling together frequently choose) that share an ample common bath. All the rooms are tastefully decorated without the frill of traditional Victorian sensibilities, and have quality, plush-queen beds. The east-wing has a spacious parlor with a modified Rumford fireplace that casts a cozy mood in the large room on a chilly winter night. The library houses four, ten-foot tall bookcases full of books, periodicals, and a wide array of board games and puzzles. The dining room offers seating for 6 and a small kitchenette with coffees, teas, and complimentary snacks that are available at all hours for guests with the midnight munchies. The new east-wing is home to three roomy guest suites, all with memory foam mattresses, full, private baths, and en suite seating areas. This side was designed to give a nod to the craftsman era, and the main level common area houses built in bookcases filled with a variety of reading material and DVDs. The furniture is masculine; a roomy leather sofa and chair, two cozy armchairs that flank the gas fireplace, and a tall, pub-style table waits to accommodate a spirited game of skill or chance. On this level you will find a small kitchenette stocked with hot and cold beverages and snacks. Our main-floor Patriot’s Suite is quite large and fully handicap accessible, with a spacious, barrier free shower. Upstairs, the Artist’s and Angler’s suites share an ample landing where snack baskets offer midnight munchies. Both of these spacious rooms have small refrigerators and individual heating and cooling controls. This wing connects to the greatroom through our airy sunroom ( a winter jungle, as we shelter our potted plants and an eleven foot tall Ficus tree here during the ski-season)

The Hartzell House greatroom is the hub of activity for the B&B. This 33’ x 20’ room houses our beautiful pool table and on the side adjoining our kitchen can accommodate seating for 20. Here we serve our two-course, made to order, gourmet breakfasts each morning and enjoy the company of those guests who want to chat while we prep meals, engage in a game of pool, watch a bit of sports or a current movie, or just mingle over a complimentary glass of wine or cup of tea. This room is an excellent small venue facility for intimate receptions, celebrations, or reunions, when Hartzell House is booked in its entirety. Ask us about catering your next small event!

Our first hive inspection… almost. 🐝

Robert suited up, gathered our tools, and were ready to see how our bees were settling into their new home.

But once we got out there, Robert made the call to wait.

The hive was sitting in direct sunlight, and instead of rushing, we decided to come back later in the day when conditions would be better for both us and the bees.

One thing we’re learning about beekeeping is that sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down and work with the bees—not on your own schedule.

We’re still learning, and we’re excited to bring you along for every step of the journey.

Have you ever watched a hive inspection before? 🐝

Beekeeping Lesson #1:

Put the bee suit on before opening the hive. 🐝😅

Tonight we secured the hives in their permanent location and opened the entrances so the bees could begin exploring their new home at Hartzell House.

We waited until evening to do it because the bees are typically calmer at night and more likely to stay together in the hive.

Everything was going smoothly… until one bee decided Robert needed a firsthand lesson.

The bees are officially home, and our beekeeping adventure has begun.

Any advice for beginner beekeepers?
